Hip New Jersey spotlights the businesses and communities that are making the Garden State fabulous!

Stronger than the Storm: Weekend Recap

Even during a weekend marred by heavy rain and thunderstorms throughout the state, the #GardenState never struggles to keep spirits high. Here’s what went down this weekend in #HipNJ’s summer weekend recap.

Friday, July 29th

The 2016 PGA Championship, a major tournament in professional golf, held its second round on Friday at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield Township. Despite several round delays caused by the inclement weather, American Jimmy Walker managed to come out on top at the end of the weekend long tournament.

It doesn’t matter how old you are or what you’re into – there’s always something going on in #NJ tailored exactly to your liking! This was made evident Friday night as traditional pop and jazz singer Tony Bennett took the stage at the Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa in Atlantic City. The legendary musician celebrates his 90th birthday this coming week and is still going at it – now THAT’s hip.

Saturday, July 30th

The 34th Annual QuickChek New Jersey Festival of Ballooning held its second of two days at Solberg Airport in Readington on Saturday. The weekend-long festival had an unfortunate early closing on Sunday, but Friday and Saturday were filled with plenty of family entertainment from amusement park rides to magic shows. Oh, and Hot Air Balloon rides were available at specific times of day, with up to 100 ascending at once.

No place I’d rather be at 6:30am

Country music superstar and heartthrob Luke Bryan managed to overcome the rain and took over the stage at BB&T Pavilion in Camden on the second of two nights of his Kill the Lights Tour. Opening acts included Little Big Town and Dustin Lynch.

Sunday, July 31st

The Haskell Invitational, an American Grade 1 race for thoroughbred horses, took place at Monmouth Park Racetrack in Oceanport. The $1 million race drew a crowd of nearly 30,000, all there to witness the intense showdown between Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist and Preakness Stakes winner Exaggerator. In the end, Exaggerator came out on top.

The 2016 Teen Choice Awards closed out the weekend, and July, Sunday night on the west coast. Among those honored with awards were Jersey-natives Nick Jonas and the late Christina Grimmie. Charlie Puth, who originates from Rumson, also received several nominations and performed his latest single We Don’t Talk Anymore with Selena Gomez.

What Exit? Web Series

One girl is living at home again after her fiancé calls off their engagement. Her best friend’s blooming NYC career takes a sharp turn when her company lets her go, taking her back home as well. While the two are excited to reconnect by hitting up the clubs, they are left with the looming question of what comes next for them. What exit will they take?

This question, among others, is answered in What Exit?, a NJ-based series that is hitting the web throughout the #GardenState. The show tells the story of Tina and Lexi, two struggling 20-somethings living in New Jersey.

Some cast and crew from the series stopped in the #HipNJ studio to share with us a little about the show and how it came to be.

Director and creator Sophia Eptamenitis told us the show was originally written as a feature. With a restricted budget, she decided to make it a web series instead. She was working on a short drama prior to What Exit? but came across a draft of the web series’ script and decided she wanted to move forward with that instead.

Lauren Klemp
, who plays Claudia, Tina’s college-aged younger sister, studied theatre at Fordham University and does a lot of work in the field, but enjoys working with Eptamenitis on What Exit? the most. Jessica Carollo, who portrays Tina, has been around the acting business all her life and studied at Circle in the Square Theatre school, located in Manhattan at the bottom of a Broadway theatre.

Klemp enjoys letting loose while filming the club scenes. Carollo particularly enjoys filming conversational scenes between two characters.

“It was just more personal and intimate,” Carollo said.
