Don’t Miss #HipNJ Mom Mindy Scheier’s Inspiring TED Talk

#HipNJ resident Mindy Scheier, President and CEO of Runway of Dreams, was selected to share her inspiring story in a featured TED talk! WATCH NOW and spread the word that Clothing CAN Make A Difference!

About Runway of Dreams: Runway of Dreams Foundation (RODF) was founded in 2014 by Mindy Scheier – a fashion designer and mother of a child with a disability. Her journey began when her son Oliver, who has a rare form of Muscular Dystrophy, wanted to wear jeans to school like his friends. She soon realized that millions of people around the world were also struggling to access fashionable clothing that meets their needs. She envisioned a world where adaptive clothing for people with disabilities was mainstream. After spending 20 years in the fashion industry and opening a design school for kids, Mindy decided to combine her experience and her passion by creating the Runway of Dreams Foundation.

The Runway of Dreams Foundation is a nonprofit that works toward a future of inclusion, acceptance and opportunity in the fashion industry for people with disabilities. Founded on the basis that clothing is a basic human need, the Runway of Dreams Foundation develops, delivers and supports charitable initiatives to broaden the reach of adaptive clothing and promote the differently-abled community in the fashion industry. Through adaptive clothing donations, employment opportunity initiatives, adaptive design workshops, awareness building campaigns and scholarships programs, the Runway of Dreams Foundation is empowering people with disabilities with opportunity, confidence, independence and style.

New Year’s Eve Fashion Guide

You may be starting to panic if you haven’t found that perfect outfit to wear when ringing in the new year. #HipNJ is here to help. Here are some fashion tips for New Year’s Eve!

Sequins are hot right now. Find yourself a sequin top, skirt, or dress and get ready to turn heads.

Chokers can complete any look, especially when paired with a faux fur jacket.

For New Year’s Eve, it’s all about gold. Whether it is your dress or your shoes, make sure something you’re rocking features the gorgeous color. As far as for the rest of the year, we think that violet will be hot.

Regardless of what you decide to wear, confidence is key.

Now, time to address those of you who are brave enough to be in Times Square for one of the coldest NYE’s on record.

Forget fashion! Your number one priority is not freezing to death.

Put on your favorite scarf, hat and gloves, and anything else that will add warmth. Hold onto your hand warmers as tight as you can and have a safe and happy New Year’s Eve!

The First Annual New York Denim Days

#HipNJ, get ready to cross the Hudson River for the fashionista event of the fall!

An exciting festival called Denim Days will be hitting New York City’s streets from September 30th to October 1st. Founders Eric Goldstein and Andrew Olah introduced the Denim Days festival to Amsterdam in 2014. Since then, it has become a staple event for denim fans and fashion lovers. The first annual New York Denim Days seeks to celebrate New York’s take on the versatile thread we all love to wear.

The city’s denim culture will be displayed on Saturday and Sunday, and everyone from fashion bloggers to families are invited to show off their own unique style.

The festival will not only feature live entertainment, food trucks, art, and kids activities, but also pop up shops, vintage showrooms, workshops, and exhibits—all showcasing the indigo process. Over forty-five established brands will be attending, some offering limited edition collections, including BLKSMTH, Jean Shop, Levi’s Made & Crafted, 3×1, and more. Some highlights include live dyeing of denim by Sayaka Toyama, and on-site jean repairs by denimrepair.com, a site dedicated to fixing your favorite blue jeans in an eco-friendly way.

Denim Days’ expansion from Amsterdam to New York proves how eager consumers are to understand what they are wearing. For those in the denim community, it is a chance to share their craft and educate others about the art. Interactive displays from denim brands as well as lectures from experts allow for this opportunity. New York Denim Days lets consumers connect with the people who make the clothing they love. It is a revolutionary event for fashion.

The first day of the event will be hosted at Metropolitan Pavilion. Tickets are available at denim-days.com/ny/tickets for $10 and at the door for $15. Students are $5 with valid identification. Denim Days will conclude at the 18th street festival, in between 6th and 7th avenue, and is free to visit.
