The Facts About Alzheimer’s Disease

#HipNJ joined Alzheimer’s New Jersey at Cricket Hill Brewery in Fairfield to talk about Alzheimer’s Disease.

Alzheimer’s New Jersey hosted Walk to Fight Alzheimer’s in October, their largest fundraising event to support New Jersey families that are impacted by the disease.

Alzheimer’s NJ explains, “When somebody has Alzheimer’s or dementia, they have difficulty with activities of daily living.” They may have trouble getting out of bed, brushing their teeth, or taking a shower because they may not know the steps to do so. “They have difficulty living their normal, daily lives,” ALZ NJ states.

More than five million Americans live with Alzheimer’s. Over 500,000 people in New Jersey are impacted by Alzheimer’s. Alzheimer’s affects not only the person who has it, but to the people who take care of them. In New Jersey, nearly one third of residents care or have cared for someone with Alzheimer’s disease. Among these caretakers, more than four in five said that it has had a negative impact on their emotional health.

Family relations can become tense when they take care of their loved ones. Nearly three in four said their family relations are strained by caregiving. 65% of caretakers also say their financial situation has been affected.

Because those who have Alzheimer’s struggle with daily living, caretakers must help them with many tasks. 51% of caretakers spend more than 20 hours a week on caregiving activities and 27% devote more than 40 hours a week.

Alzheimer’s New Jersey is dedicated to offering continuous hope and support to individuals and families that are impacted by Alzheimer’s and dementia. For more information, visit alznj.org.
