State Theatre New Jersey’s “Relaxed Performances”

Anna Marie Gewirtz, Chief of External Affairs at State Theatre New Jersey, sat with Steve Adubato on “One-on-One” to discuss their unique “relaxed performances” for children on the autism spectrum.

“This is a program we started about two years ago,” Gewirtz says. “It’s very near and dear to my heart.”

The program offers high-quality live entertainment in a safe, welcoming, sensory-friendly environment.

According to State Theatre New Jersey’s website, at a relaxed performance, you will find:

  • Lighting and sound levels that are modulated to reduce anxiety and stress.
  • A judgment-free environment, with a relaxed attitude toward noise and moving around during the show.
  • A separate break area with soft seating, fidget toys, and activities.
  • Ushers and volunteers who have been specially trained to assist you.
  • A social story, provided in advance, to help you prepare your child for your trip to the theater.
