Music Monday: The Happy Fits

It is #MusicMonday and #HipNJ is here to tell you about The Happy Fits, a new indie-rock band with an alternative flair from the Garden State.

Calvin Langman – Vocals, Cello

Luke Davis – Drummer

Ross Monteith – Vocals, Guitar

Although they went to the same high school, the band mates didn’t know each other until they heard from friends that they all played music and were looking to start a band.  What started off as playing cover songs turned into writing original music and playing concerts across Jersey.

After uploading music to Spotify for friends and family, The Happy Fits were discovered by their now manager, who scored them a spot on the “Fresh Finds” playlist.

Be on the lookout for their upcoming album, which is set to be released in February. In the meantime, you can listen to their songs on iTunes, Spotify, Google Play, Bandcamp, and Amazon

Check out their studio interview and their performance of their original song  “While You Fade Away” above.

#MusicMonday: Happy Hawthorne

It’s #MusicMonday, and #HipNJ is here to tell you about an up-and-coming New Jersey band named Happy Hawthorne.

Before we learn about how the band came to be, here is a breakdown of who is who in this Garden State group:

Steve Hawthorne: Lead Singer/ Rhythm Guitarist

Chris DeCheser: Lead Guitarist/ Backup Vocalist

Deniz Piatt: Drummer

Riley Cocchi: Bassist

Hawthorne got started at The Original Music School in Morristown. There, he met Cocchi and DeCheser. Piatt discovered the group online and jumped right in. “I think it adds a unique aspect to the band,” Cocchi says of being the only female band member.

The band says that they are still developing their sound, which sometimes ranges from rock to jazz.  Their songs are mainly originals, but they tend to perform covers at their live shows.

The band treated the #HipNJ studio to a performance of their original song, “Mad Max.” Check it out below.

They didn’t stop there! Happy Hawthorne also performed their cover of “Hang Me Up To Dry” by Cold War Kids. Watch below!
