Using Vintage Pieces with C.R. Interior Designs

Vintage: yay or nay? Love it or hate it, there’s no doubt vintage pieces can add quite a bit of class and history to your décor. Here are some ways that Fig + Farro went 100% reclaimed, compliments of Caitlin Rutkay of C.R. Interior Designs:

  • Located in a former schoolhouse, Fig + Farro’s 6,000 square feet of dining space, along with a 3,000-square-foot prep kitchen in the basement, is furnished almost entirely with reclaimed items.
  • The emphasis on reused and recycled items—including rugs, dining chairs and tables, kitchen equipment, and accessories like antique door knockers—helps further the restaurant’s mission to fight climate change by reducing carbon footprints.
  • Vintage pieces add a layer of history and texture new items cannot.

Katherine Mahony

Katherine Mahony Designs

International fashionista Katherine Mahony stopped by the #HipNJ studio to speak with our Maria Falzo about her classic, timeless designs!

Katherine got her start when she opened up a styling business catering to women’s wardrobe needs soon after moving to the U.S in 2001 from England. Her business helped women develop everyday looks, perform wardrobe overhauls, and dress for cocktail and black tie events.

Katherine, who has been featured numerous times in British Vogue, explained that her goal is “to give women easy-to-wear, flattering pieces that can still look glamorous over a pair of jeans or leggings.”

Her latest designs are all women’s outerwear made with Tweed, Wool and Cashmere, hand stitched blends, many of which she showcased at New York Fashion Week 2017. Her inspiration comes from living in five countries on four continents, from England, France, Africa, and Asia to the USA.

In addition to her ultra-chic capes, #HipNJ fell in love with the Rosie Posie, a gorgeous dress for spring named after her best friend and inspired by the “ladies who lunch” royalty.

Organization Goals

New Season, New Organization Goals!

Whether its just a desire to freshen your space after a long winter or to declutter after too much hoarding (c’mon #HipNJ, we can all relate!) here are your Spring 2018 tips for an organized home, compliments of Caitlin Rutkay of C.R. Interior Designs:

  • Baskets and bins are your friend. If it can be hidden, do it! Create a simple streamlined look to hide a multitude of messes. These shelves are from Caitlin’s own laundry room.

  • Be ruthless. The pro organizers agree–if its not been worn in a year, donate. Don’t clutter the cubbies with jackets that will never be reached for anyway.
  • Better your lighting. Want an easier routine? Find what you need faster with upgraded lighting in your mud room, laundry or garage.
  • Tough wallcovering decorates and protects. Not an organizational tip, but it covers a pet peeve-dirty knicked walls in high traffic areas. Dense commerical grade vinyls are stylish AND practical. Think the look of wood planks or woven grasspaper but in super durable constructions. As far as your trim and built ins think beyond white for lessening scuffs.
