Those Wanting a “Sleep Divorce” is on the Rise in New Jersey

Sleep Divorce, a phenomenon where married persons remain together but chooses to slumber separately, is on the rise amongst couples nationwide. A national survey conducted by Mattress Clarity, a sleep product review website, asked couples ranging from ages 18 – 65+ if they would opt for a sleep divorce and #HipNJ is here to give you a breakdown of this amusing study.

In our own great state, a whopping 38% of New Jersey men would like to file for a sleep divorce from their partners while only 23% of women feel the same (statewide average of 30.9%). The most commonly cited reason for wanting a separate sleeping space was the difference in sleep schedules followed by sleep disorders (such as snoring), partners that are disruptive while sleeping, different sleeping habits and having a bed that it simply too small.

So why is sleeping separately from a partner considered so taboo? The same survey revealed that bad co-sleeping has ended a relationship for one in 10 Americans! That staggering number is too glaring to ignore especially considering the fact that many couples admit to fighting over things such as sleep habits and sleeping with pets.

Although 41.4% of Americans who sleep separately would hesitate to tell friends and family, many admit to a positive change in the relationship after their “divorce”. The irrational fear of judgement from others in due to the established social norms of our society but Joe Auer of Mattress Clarity thinks that will change:

“If sharing a bed with your other half is leaving you tired and grumpy, why not consider a sleep divorce? Over a quarter of Americans have actually said that sleeping apart has improved their relationship.”

No matter your sleep preferences, #HipNJ wants to expose couples to the reality that they are not alone in their sleep preferences!
