#GivingTuesday Gwendolyn And Joseph Straus Charitable Fund

The Gwendolyn And Joseph Straus Charitable Fund, a charitable organization founded by the Straus family, recently distributed $1.5 million to 185 families in Puerto Rico affected by last year’s Hurricane Maria with the help from  CareOne, a premier, family-owned healthcare company with more than 55 senior living centers across six states.

As the world reflects on the one-year anniversary of the most devastating natural disaster to ever hit Puerto Rico, #HipNJ is proud to note that CareOne was quick to help raise money for a fund that brought hope, relief and comfort to those on the island who needed it most.  The generous donations have helped many families purchase household necessities, generators, healthcare supplies and equipment, and so much more.

The Straus family and CareOne’s commitment to rebuilding Puerto Rico started immediately after Hurricane Maria hit thanks to CareOne CEO Daniel E. Straus and Executive Vice President Elizabeth Straus. On October 11th, CareOne participated in the first of two relief missions to Puerto Rico with New Jersey healthcare leaders and physicians from CareOne and RWJBarnabas Health. The trip included visits to hospitals where physicians spoke with local healthcare professionals and patients on the ground to evaluate how best to address the immediate needs of the island’s medical community.

Following the October 11th trip, Senior Leadership mobilized to raise additional funds for Puerto Rico by arranging a benefit gala entitled “Starry Night Masquerade.”  This event was spearheaded by CareOne President and CEO Daniel E. Straus and Executive Vice President Elizabeth Straus. The event speaks to the culture of philanthropy that is ingrained in CareOne as a company.

“Starry Night Masquerade” was a star-studded evening that included celebrity guests like NFL players Victor Cruz, Jason Pierre-Paul and many NFL alumni, recording artists Pitbull and JoJo, and models and actresses Danielle Brooks of “Orange is the New Black” and Joan Smalls. Watch #HipNJ’s coverage from the star-studded affair.

One year later, the Gwendolyn And Joseph Straus Charitable Fund, with support from CareOne, continues its relief planning with an on-the-ground team who continue to work to ensure the proper dissemination of supplies to medical facilities, as well as to transport patients in need from Puerto Rico to New Jersey.

CareOne Raises $4 Million for Puerto Rico!

All the stars came out for CareOne‘s “Starry Night Masquerade,” and #HipNJ was there for all the action!

Our Lisa Marie Latino chatted with the A-List stars on the black carpet, including pop singer JoJo, New York Giants Super Bowl Champions Jason Pierre-Paul and Victor Cruz, and CareOne President and CEO Daniel E. Straus and Executive Vice President Elizabeth Straus. Other attendees included various NFL alumni, Danielle Brooks of Orange is the New Black and model Joan Smalls.

This event especially hit home for New Jersey native great Cruz, who is half-Puerto Rican. “Puerto Rico is near and dear to my heart…Anytime you get to raise money for a great cause and for a cause like Puerto Rico and their disaster relief, you can’t ask for a better place to do it and a better organization [than CareOne] to facilitate it.”

CareOne’s event, held at the Skylight Clarkson North in New York City, raised more than $4 million in support of hurricane-relief efforts in Puerto Rico. Prior to “Starry Night Masquerade,” CareOne embarked on an October 11th mission trip to Puerto Rico where staff visited hospitals and spoke with physicians and patients on the ground to evaluate how best to address the immediate needs of the island’s medical community.

The event’s emcee, CNN’s Jason Carroll, was so moved by the outpouring of love from the attendees: “These people here tonight are making an effort to really make a change, and I’m so honored to be a part of it.”

Thanks to the generosity of CareOne’s supporters, the company plans to continue providing help to the citizens of Puerto Rico and are scheduling follow-up trips in the coming weeks and months!

“We have found that each person can make a difference when they come together, and we are going to continue to do so,” proclaimed Elizabeth Straus.
