BBQ, Bourbon & Biergarten Festival

#HipNJ’s Lisa Marie Latino and Cara Di Falco of Cara’s Cucina stopped by the BBQ, Bourbon & Biergarten Festival in Montclair to get some inside scoop from chefs, vendors, and more!

“Montclair is the food capital of NJ,” owner of Ani Ramen, Luck Sarabhayavanija, said. “What more could you ask for?”

We went Live on Facebook with Ryan DePersio, owner of Fascino’s, to ask whether or not he would be entering the day’s competition. “I’m not really competing. I’m just here to feed,” he said.

Gelotti was there with a selection of their handmade ice creams. “I know that our product is one of the best around,” employee Monica Soto said.

“It really covers the entirety of the state’s food scene,” John Holl, author of Dishing Up New Jersey, stated. He spent the day signing copies of his book.

The day was full of delicious food, dessert, music, and more. In the end, Halcyon won the BB&B Champion title, but the real winner is the community for having so many fantastic restaurants!

Thank you to the Montclair Food and Wine Festival and Montclair Art Museum for shining a spotlight on some of #HipNJ’s best BBQ spots!

#HipNJ Celebrates #NationalLollipopDay

Lollipops, who doesn’t love them? Whether you’re keeping your mouth busy or are just in the mood for a sweet treat, these suckers come in handy more than we know. And for that reason, there’s a national holiday devoted to them. July 20th is #NationalLollipopDay!

Allow #HipNJ to aid in your celebration by sharing with you some fun facts about these tasty candies!

1. The world’s largest lollipop was made by See’s Candies in 2012. It was 7003 pounds, over four feet in length and 5 feet in height, and had a 12 foot stick. How many licks do you think it takes to get to the center of THAT?
2. The original lollipop machine would produce 40 lollipops per minute but the modern ones make 5,900 a minute. Isn’t technology awesome?
3. The most popular lollipop flavor is Cotton Candy. There is no surprise here.
4. Some lollipops are made for adults. The candy company Lollyphile produces a variety of beer flavored ones. For fans of the grape, they also offer merlot, chardonnay, and cabernet. Keep out of small children’s reach.
5. The lollipop, invented by George Smith, was named after a racing horse he liked, named Lolly Pop. A cute pet name turned into a beloved candy, who would’ve thought?

It seems like there’s a lot of lollipops to go around, right? Well, if you’re looking to contribute to the lollipop chaos, check out these three top-notch candy shops where you’re sure to find a lollipop in almost any flavor you can think of!

Weekend Recap: Jersey is the Ultimate Concert Destination

This summer heat wave is pretty intense, but that certainly hasn’t stopped concert tours from passing through the #GardenState! Billboard chart-toppers seemed to be running rapid all weekend long. Leave it to #HipNJ to keep you posted in case you missed something in our weekend recap!

Friday, July 15th

Let’s first recap the weekend for those who couldn’t make it to a #NJ concert. This summer, Jersey shore water appears to be clearer than ever and it really came to the attention of many moving into this weekend. The phenomenon is influenced by the amount of rain the state gets and the strength of the wind. But don’t let yourself get hung up on the facts because this may not be ever-lasting. Go out and enjoy the aqua-green tinted water before it’s too late!

Justin Bieber returned to Jersey just two weeks after his Newark show in the current leg of the Purpose World Tour. But this time he visited Atlantic City – he wanted to see the clear shore water, too! Boardwalk Hall was lit up as the superstar performed the set list that we just never seem to get tired of.

Saturday, July 16th

Do you remember when…The Beach Boys wowed audiences decades ago? Oh, wait, they still do! The iconic rock group showed that they still have it in them on Saturday night at the Great Auditorium in Ocean Grove.

Keith Urban really brought the fire with him at his concert on Saturday night as part of his ripCORD World Tour. No, really, a food truck fire plagued the PNC Bank Arts Center earlier in the day. The concert went on, nevertheless. And the way fans see it, the fire was just a foreshadowing of the awesome show that he would later put on.

Sunday, July 17th

Vans Warped Tour is back this summer and it made its stop in Jersey on Sunday. This tour is the Super Bowl for rock fans. How could it not be? With appearances by top-name bands such as Good Charlotte and American Authors, what rock fan wouldn’t be rushing to get front and center?

Speaking of the Super Bowl, remember Coldplay’s awe-inspiring performance at Super Bowl 50 earlier this year? The British rock group brought that same showmanship and energy on the second of two nights at MetLife Stadium on Sunday. East Rutherford was just the first stop on the American leg of their A Head Full of Dreams Tour in support of their latest studio album of the same name.
