Healthy Giving Day

HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley is hosting Healthy Giving Day on Saturday, November 5 at Paramus Park Mall in Paramus.

Through this event, the Hospital hopes to raise awareness about preventive health and staying on track during the holiday season, as well as generate funds for charity partner, Table to Table. Table to Table is a community based food rescue program that serves millions of hungry residents in Northern New Jersey.

#HipNJ spoke with social media and yoga powerhouses Masumi Goldman and Kate Alexander of Two Fit Moms about their role. They each will be leading their own demonstration, aimed at bringing the body, mind, and spirit together.

Goldman will be demonstrating the act of a “five minute self-imposed timeout.” She will provide tips to help people relieve stress during the holidays, to stop their mind from racing, and to bring relaxation. Through breathing techniques and meditation, Goldman states that she hopes to encourage everyone to “find a few minutes out of the day to do something good for ourselves.”

Alexander will be leading a food demonstration which will provide information on creating their own healthy granola bar. “Not only can people make their own granola bars, but they can be made easily,” she says. She will encourage guests to look at alternative ingredients to make a traditional recipe healthier. “Substitutions can be made that won’t change recipe all that much.”

“The hospital is going to have a lot of different demonstrations, but one thing that we really believe is that when you share your gift, it is gratifying for you and for other people who receive the messages,” Goldman says. “Whenever you do something for yourself, you always feel good. It is Important to take a moment to take care of ourselves. We are all busy, and it’s hard to carve out the time. But when you do, you are happy that you did it,” Alexander states.

We also spoke with Dawnn Depalma, Patient Experience Manager and Advocate of Hackensack University Medical Center at Pascack Valley about their Bedside Consierge Program, as well as their involvement with Healthy Giving Day.

Through this program, which enables a patient to use their iPhone or other technological device to request nonclinical services to their room, an efficient way to reeducate the patient is created, and another opportunity to explain the patient’s medication and care instructions following discharge arises. The services offered through this program include access to the patient’s health records, the option to request to have an Uber to pick them up, pet therapy, and music therapy.

Attendees will have the chance to have their blood pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol levels screened, and also consult with HUMCPV physicians, like podiatrist Dr. Jackie Sutera, who will talk about foot health and choosing the right shoes.

“Healthy Giving Day is all about community, health and wellness,” commented Emily Holliman, CEO of HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley. “We are thrilled to be able to offer preventive care and wellness services to the Bergen County community, and are also excited to be supporting Table to Table — for every person that signs up for a screening at the event, the Hospital will donate $1 to the organization.”

Sex and the City’s Carrie Bradshaw

The Great Gatsby’s Daisy Buchanan

"Daisy's voice makes her sound untouchable. Nick thinks of it as "full of money," and that it sounds like it belongs to someone who lives "high in a white palace, the king's daughter, the golden girl […]" (7.99). You know, the prom queen, the sorority president, the pageant winner: exactly the kind of girl that neither Gatsby nor Nick ever have a chance with. Gatsby hadn't once ceased looking at Daisy, and I think he revalued everything in his house according to the measure of response it drew from her well-loved eyes. Sometimes, too, he stared around at his possessions in a dazed way, as though in her actual and astounding presence none of it was any longer real. Once he nearly toppled down a flight of stairs.
