Our Weekend Recap Kicks Off in Rio

Cheers to the weekend! August may be the Sunday of summer, but that’s no reason to keep the good times from rolling. #HipNJ is dedicated to bringing you round-the-clock coverage of everything going on #NJ-related. Here’s what went down this weekend in our weekend recap.

Friday, August 5th

The 2016 Summer Olympic Games kicked off in Rio de Janeiro on Friday with a huge opening ceremony that paid tribute to the history of Brazil’s rich culture and climate change. Up to 11,000 athletes from 206 countries marched into the arena. Of those included the 31 NJ-native American athletes. Check out non-stop coverage of the games until August 21st and see them show the entire world what the #GardenState is made of.

iPic, Bergen County’s first dine-in movie theatre located in Fort Lee, opened to the public on Friday. The theatre is the first of its kind in that it’s a bit more upscale than traditional movie theatres. The meals offered are prepared by top-tier chefs and are finger foods for the most part. Ticket options include Premium, which grants a customer soft leather seating and personal pull-out tables, and Premium Plus, which allows customers a personal two or three-person pod with reclining seats, waiter service and unlimited popcorn. Yum! Premium tickets are $19 while Premium Plus tickets are $27. There’s only eight screens and 528 seats, so make your reservation today!

In what seemed like a follow-up to Taylor Swift’s NJ wedding crash earlier this summer, Steven Van Zandt made a surprise appearance and joined The Infernos Band on stage at a Florham Park wedding. Van Zandt is a member of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band and is also known for his acting career which includes a starring role in The Sopranos.

Music legend Paul McCartney made a stop at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford as part of his One on One Tour. There’s no telling of when the 74-year-old will stop blessing us with live renditions of his own material and The Beatle’s tunes. So we’re just going to let it be.

Fifth Harmony took the stage in Camden this weekend at the BB&T Pavilion on The 7/27 Tour. Don’t you wish working from home was as fun as this girl group makes it sound?

Last night was so amazing??

Inside The Wedding Taylor Swift Crashed (HipNJ Exclusive)

By Kenneth Barilari

Earlier this week, we told you about how Taylor Swift surprised a lucky New Jersey couple at their wedding, giving a surprise performance and taking photos with guests.

Taylor Wedding

Now, #HipNJ has an exclusive inside look, thanks to the Brant Beach Yacht Club in Ship Bottom.

We had the opportunity to speak with Michele Kondash, the Club’s Assistant General Manager, about the occasion from the venue’s perspective.

Just a quick recap: Taylor surprised the couple, Max Singer and Kenya Smith, after receiving a letter from the groom’s sister, Ali. The idea came after the passing of Max’s mother. Max and Kenya held a private ceremony in his mother’s hospital room so she could see her son get married. “Blank Space” was the soundtrack to their mother-son dance. Ali wrote about this in the letter and asked if Swift would attend the wedding.

We found out that Taylor’s attendance was not just a surprise for Max and Kenya. The venue did not know she was coming either! All they were told is that someone would be coming to surprise the couple. They assumed that it would be a relative or someone special the couple hasn’t seen in a while and wasn’t expecting to come.

brant1When she did find out that the mysterious special guest was superstar Taylor Swift, Michele was in shock and disbelief. “It’s not every day your favorite artist shows up to your work,” she said.

Not being aware of the superstar’s plan to attend meant that there were no special accommodations to make and no secret to keep.

When Taylor stepped into the venue, she greeted the staff members and shook their hands. Michele went on to say that the singer “was very sweet and nice.”

brantweddingWhen asked what Taylor’s coming meant to the venue, she stated that the Club as a whole is “just honored and proud that she was here and created such an amazing memory for the couple.”

So, what exactly did Taylor add to the couple’s special day? “When it comes to weddings or any milestone life event, there’s nothing more heartbreaking than someone you love not being there on your day,” Michele said. “I can’t speak on behalf of Max and Kenya, but I think this surprise was a pretty special silver lining.”

As far as the influence it will have on the venue’s future, “We definitely now have one heck of a story!”

Taylor Swift Crashes New Jersey Wedding

By Kenneth Barilari

A New Jersey couple got the surprise of a lifetime at their wedding on Saturday.

Taylor Swift surprised newlyweds Max Singer and Kenya Smith by showing up to their wedding and serenading them with an acoustic version of her hit song “Blank Space.”

Max’s sister Ali had contacted Swift months back asking the singer if she would attend the wedding. The idea came after the passing of her and Max’s mother. Max and Kenya held a private ceremony in his mother’s hospital room so she could be present for his wedding. “Blank Space” was the soundtrack to their mother-son dance.

The wedding took place at Brant Beach Yacht Club in Ship Bottom, New Jersey.

Guests have taken to Twitter and Facebook to post videos of the superstar performing at the reception.

Swift took time to pose for photographs with the bride and groom, as well as their families.

The singer even posted some of the photos on her official Instagram page.

Swift gave the couple a personalized card with her lyrics “So it’s gonna be forever,” written in watercolors and the wedding date underneath. Surrounding the lyrics is a floral circle, with the names of the bride and groom on each side.

The wedding’s DJ Mike Klebacher took to Facebook to share his feelings about the singer’s attendance. “I’m so happy for our wedding couple, and am enamored for Taylor doing this for such a great reason. Wow!” he said.

Brant Beach Yacht Club shared on Facebook, “We always knew BBYC weddings were special.” They then congratulated the newlyweds.

Thanks to Taylor, this couple’s special day became even more magical. It’s a love story, and Taylor Swift just said yes.
