EXIT 82 CELEBRATING 10 YEARS

EXIT 82 THEATRE PRESENTS THE DROWSY CHAPERONE

Exit 82 Theatre Company opens the Exit 82 Studio Theater on Main Street in Toms River on July 6, 2018 with the company’s revival of the Tony Award winning musical, The Drowsy Chaperone. The space offers a unique, intimate theater experience for its viewers. It is also BYOB for patrons over the age of 21.

“Our hope is for the Exit 82 Studio Theater to become a staple of our community and give a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘community theater,'” says Founder and Executive Producer, Keely Davenport. “We want the Exit 82 Studio Theater to be a place for everyone in our community to not only be entertained but join us to be creative and feel accepted.”

The Drowsy Chaperone features one show-stopping song and dance number after another. In addition, it won five Tony Awards, including Best Book and Best Original Score.Taking place in a New York apartment, a man takes us through his favorite record: the cast recording of a fictitious 1928 musical. The recording comes to life and The Drowsy Chaperone begins as the man in the chair looks on.

The New York Magazine hails it as “The Perfect Broadway Musical.” The Drowsy Chaperone is a masterful meta-musical, poking fun at all the tropes that characterize the musical theater genre. Furthermore, “It takes you to another world and it gives you a tune to carry in your head.”

The Drowsy Chaperone runs every weekend in July. This includes Fridays and Saturdays at 8p.m. and Sundays at 2p.m. Tickets are general admission and are $25 for adults and $23 for seniors. Group rates and ADA seating are also available. The Exit 82 Studio Theater is located at 73 Main Street, Toms River, NJ. Tickets on sale now at www.exit82theatre.com.

#HipNJ visits 128 West State Café

#HipNJ visited 128 West State Café, a new meeting place in the heart of Historic Trenton, to learn how they are giving new meaning to “Capitol Perk.”

“The idea was to appeal to the business community,” owner Dale Florio states. People along West State Street began asking for a breakfast and lunch café that would serve as a gathering place across from the State Capitol, and 128 West State Café was born.

“The idea was to have healthy, fresh food,” Florio states of the café’s unique menu. “There’s some variety there, which people seem to enjoy,” café manager Ando Dell says.

The staff has been there since the beginning, which adds to the café’s warm and welcoming environment. “We’re bringing people together, and it has become the meeting place we hoped it would be,” Florio says.

#MusicMonday: Happy Hawthorne

It’s #MusicMonday, and #HipNJ is here to tell you about an up-and-coming New Jersey band named Happy Hawthorne.

Before we learn about how the band came to be, here is a breakdown of who is who in this Garden State group:

Steve Hawthorne: Lead Singer/ Rhythm Guitarist

Chris DeCheser: Lead Guitarist/ Backup Vocalist

Deniz Piatt: Drummer

Riley Cocchi: Bassist

Hawthorne got started at The Original Music School in Morristown. There, he met Cocchi and DeCheser. Piatt discovered the group online and jumped right in. “I think it adds a unique aspect to the band,” Cocchi says of being the only female band member.

The band says that they are still developing their sound, which sometimes ranges from rock to jazz.  Their songs are mainly originals, but they tend to perform covers at their live shows.

The band treated the #HipNJ studio to a performance of their original song, “Mad Max.” Check it out below.

They didn’t stop there! Happy Hawthorne also performed their cover of “Hang Me Up To Dry” by Cold War Kids. Watch below!
