5 Tips for Working at Home

5 Tips for Working at Home

For students, entrepreneurs, and remote workers, being able to work productively at home is vital. It’s easy to get distracted when you’re trying to get through your workload, and that’s especially true if you’re surrounded by home comforts. While some people can get to work anywhere, not everyone can work in front of the TV or from the bed. That means you’re going to need to find a space in your home where you can get comfortable, and one that allows you to focus on your studies or your work tasks. Whether you have a full-sized spare room that you can transform into an office or you’re limited in terms of space, here are some work at home tips that might transform your productivity.

1. Consider Workspace
Ideally, you want to be able to devote an entire room to your work, but this isn’t an option for everyone. Look around your home and take note of redundant spaces. Have you got a hallway cubby hole that’s being used for nothing but a few ornaments? Get rid of them and put a desk there instead. Have a conservatory that you rarely use? That’s the ideal workspace. If space is really limited, consider doing some light attic renovations.

2. Think About Light
Never underestimate the importance of having enough light. While there are many benefits to having a good source of natural light, even artificial light is better than trying to work in a dark and gloomy space. Not only will bad lighting increase your chances of eye strain, but it will also harm your productivity too. Look at some lighting options if you don’t have windows that will give you the natural light you need.

3. Think Security
Home offices and workspaces for students means expensive technology that’s always online. That means you’re vulnerable to both cybercrime and real-world crime. Keep your college assignments or your business safe by investing in high-quality cybersecurity hardware and software, as well as online tools like password generators. Don’t forget practical security too. Always have a good insurance policy from providers like Insurance Geek, and check that your doors and windows have sturdy locks.

4. Sit in Comfort
You won’t be able to concentrate on your dissertation or your daily deadlines if you’re squirming on a hardwood chair that you grabbed from the kitchen. Always invest in a good quality chair so that you spend less time trying to get comfortable and more time with your head in the game. Make sure that you try a few chair options out before you buy. You want something with good support for your back and is suitably comfortable for those 9-5 days.

5. Go Green
There’s been lots of research into the benefits of having some plant-life in your workspace. Not only can some greenery help to cut down your stress levels, having plants around you while you work can also boost your productivity, reduce your chances of falling sick, and even keeps the air cleaner. If you want to be more creative at work, then getting some easy to look after plants is always a good idea.

From working on your dissertation to filing your invoices to taking part in video conferences with head office, you’ll get more done if you give some thought to where you work. Take the time to build a workspace that suits your work style and you could find that you’re more productive than you ever thought possible.
