1. Protect Your Artwork
The first and foremost way that a mat board is typically used is to protect artwork in framing applications. Whenever you frame a picture, photograph, or some other kind of wall decor, you’ll typically have a large piece of glass or acrylic resting against it.
Having a precut mat board act as a separator between the artwork and the acrylic or glass will protect the artwork from direct contact. Not only will this help to keep the artwork in good condition over time, but should the art piece drop from a height and have anything happen to the glass or acrylic, the separation distance will keep the artwork itself from being harmed.
2. Sturdy Backing
Without using precut mat boards on the back of your frames, you could easily end up with a flimsy frame that won’t hold up over time. Particularly if you plan to nail the frame on to a wall, or set it against anything abrasive, it needs the sturdy backing that a precut mat board would provide.
If you don’t use at least some kind of backing, you’re just asking for the artwork to get damaged.
3. Poster Board Display
Precut mat boards also make for excellent posters for display purposes. If you need to create a presentation that requires printed visual aids, you can very easily attach those visuals to a precut mat board and call it a day.
The sturdiness of the board will not only allow it to stand up by itself with minimal support, but also ensure that the poster holds up well over time.
4. Scrapbooking
Another excellent use for precut mat boards is within scrapbooking applications. If you’re the type to keep your memories organized into a neat little scrapbook, mat board can serve as an excellent backing for you to stick your pictures on to.
Given that scrapbooks are meant to be looked at after a long time to enjoy past memories, the sturdiness and longevity of mat board make it an excellent choice for scrapbooks.
5. Paper Craft Projects
Finally, precut mat board is excellent for general paper craft projects. Whether you’re designing a model airplane and need firm material for the fuselage and wings, or want to use something other than paper mache for a school project volcano, mat boards can do the trick for you.
