A lot of health foods seem to get their 5 minutes of fame, and then Poof! We never hear of them again. Can the same be said for one of the latest food trends, Bone Broth? I think not.
Bone broth has entered the food scene, guns a blazing, and it’s not going anywhere, and for good reason. Bone broth has multiple medicinal values and is made from real, whole foods. Its rich and comforting to help get you through these cold winter months and can even help your immune system battle those nasty little germs that are going around.
Bone broth’s greatest (and scientifically proven) health benefit is its ability to give your immune system a boost! It contains an anti-inflammatory agent that helps to reduce respiratory distress as well as helps ward off colds and flus. With everything that 2020 has brought us, a little extra immune support can do a body good!
Another powerhouse benefit of incorporating bone broth into your diet is its ability to help heal your gut. The abundance of amino acids and gelatin help to strengthen the lining of your gut and reduce gut inflammation. This leads to a happier digestive system and reduced inflammation not only in your gut, but throughout your entire body. If you are battling leaky gut, IBS, or any other gut related health issues, adding bone broth to your daily routine could help you on the road to recovery!
Last, but most definitely not least, is bone broth’s anti-aging properties! As we age, our body’s production of collagen begins to decrease and we start to see the signs of aging. Collagen is the structural protein found in skin and connective tissue, so by consuming this collagen of a regular basis, it leads to better skin hydration and elasticity.
One particularly important thing to remember when it comes to store bought bone broth is that not all bone broth is created equal! When shopping for bone broth you want to buy frozen or refrigerated broth. These types of broth hold all of the collagen you want to consume. Your broth should be gelatinous when defrosted. Shelf stable, or broth in a carton, does not contain the rich collagen you need, and you will be missing out on all the key benefits the broth holds! You also want to make sure your broth is made from real, whole foods, with no added unnecessary ingredients. Two of my favorite brands of broth are Bonafide Provisions (found in the freezer section of Whole Foods) and Trader Joe’s (found in their refrigerated section of their stores).
For all of the reasons (and more) I am a forever fan of bone broth. I drink it as often as possible and recommend it to everyone! It’s not only great for drinking straight out of a mug, but it is excellent for cooking with as well. If you add one thing to your health and wellness routine this winter, this should be it!
