Joe Torre Safe At Home Foundation Gala

Joe Torre and the New York Yankees are synonymous with class, and that was on full display at Joe Torre Safe at Home Foundation‘s 12th Annual Celebrity Gala.

A-listers from the worlds of sports, media and Hollywood collided on the Pier 60 red carpet, and #HipNJ’s Lisa Marie Latino was there for it all.

“Joe is a wonderful human being, and he does so much to change the lives of women.  I’m proud of everything they do,” said television personality (and proud #HipNJ resident!), Dr. Mehmet Oz.

Safe at Home Foundation was founded in 2002 by Joe and his wife, Ali Torre.  Joe and his siblings were victims of domestic violence growing up, and he wanted to “stop the cycle”and save lives.

“It’s hard to dig back into your childhood and tell some dark stories about what happened to you personally,” said Yankees great David Cone.  “Not only does that take courage, but to take the step to do something about it says a lot about the man that he is.”

The gala, who honored Yankees legend Andy Pettitte, supported the Foundation’s programming initiative, Margaret’s Place, named in honor of Joe’s mother. This violence prevention and intervention model offers students an opportunity to explore issues of violence in a stable, non-threatening environment, while helping them understand that they are not alone or to blame. There are currently 11 Margaret’s Places in New York City and Los Angeles, where they have reached more than 45,000 students through countless school-wide campaigns, healing activities, educational opportunities, and private and group counseling.

“I’m here to support Joe because I love him so much, he’s a great guy and he’s done so much to the city of New York,” said television personality Meredith Vieira. “He’s done so much…particularly for kids who live in abusive homes.  What he’s saying is you’re not alone, and you need to talk, and there is hope.”

“We know we’re doing something that works,” said Joe.  “We’ve had kids come in our program who were thinking about joining a gang, and all of a sudden they are going to college.  We want to let them know when they come out the other end of this thing, they have a shot and we’re going to be there for them.”

#HipNJ: CCandy, MLB Chidren’s Clothing Line

#HipNJ’s very own Lisa Marie Latino went behind the scenes with the master mind of CCandy, Apline citizen Amber Sabathia, to get the inside scoop on the new MLB children’s clothing line!

Amber tells #HipNJ that each season CCandy is “getting better and better and cuter and cuter”! Her idea started three years ago but did not officially take off until a year ago. Last month actually marked CCandy’s 1st Birthday!

CC Sabathia, MLB pitcher for the New York Yankees, as well as proud husband of Amber, tells us he thinks this line is awesome! He says it was kind of a dream at first but now seeing kids out there modeling what his wife designed is really awesome.

If you are interested in the CCandy children’s line it can be found in every MLB team store across the country! CC and Amber’s son, Carter, says he loves the shirt he is modeling in this segment but of course the Yankees and his dad too! Awww

Amber says for any fellow mommy mobiles the key is to follow your dreams, keep going and do not give up. “Eventually your dream will happen”.

Derek Jeter’s Turn 2 Foundation Gala

Pequannock, New Jersey-born Derek Jeter has been dazzling New York Yankees fans for almost 20 years, and his accomplishments off the field have been just as impressive.

Since the launch of his Turn 2 Foundation in 1996, the charity has awarded more than $19 million in grants to promote healthy lifestyles for thousands of children.

#HipNJ’s Lisa Marie Latino recently attended Turn 2’s 18th Annual Gala Dinner at the Sheraton New York Times Square in New York City, which raised over one million dollars for their various programs. Derek’s Yankee teammates (like CC Sabathia, Mark Teixeira, Jacoby Ellsbury and Brett Gardner), Hollywood celebrities (Seth Meyers) and some Jersey staples (Joe Piscopo and Sampson Davis) came out to support The Captain.  Guests were also treated to a special performance by international recording artist Robin Thicke.

On the red carpet, Lisa Marie chatted with Derek, his former manager Joe Torre, and former teammate Tino Martinez.  We also spoke with Senior VP of Marketing for the New York Yankees, Deborah Tymon (who was awarded with the 2014 Turn 2 MVP award) and MLB Network‘s Harold Reynolds.

Watch our segment to learn more about the great work Turn 2 is doing in the community, his Hall-of-Fame career, and how it all started right here in #HipNJ!
