Happy first day of Hanukkah #HipNJ! Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, is observed for eight nights and days. Each night a candle is lit on the menorah until the final night.
Round jelly doughnuts called sufganiyot are eaten during the holiday.
Latkes, also called potato pancakes, are another food enjoyed not only during Hanukkah but also all year round.
Children play with dreidels during Hanukkah. Each side of the toy represents a different action.
Gifts are opened every night.
The National Hanukkah Menorah will be lit tonight at 4 p.m. on the Ellipse at the President’s Park. There will also be performances from the United States Air Force Band and Dreidelman and the Macabees.
Have a happy first night of Hanukkah, #HipNJers!
