Spring Cleaning Your Skin with Drunk Elephant

Written by: Carissa Abraham

Spruce up your Skincare Routine

Spring is finally here! And by ‘Spring’ I mean whatever Mother Nature decides for the next few weeks -welcome to New Jersey! We can finally start “spring cleaning” to reveal that beautiful glow our skin has been trying to achieve all winter!

One of my go-to and most trustworthy brands is Drunk Elephant. Naturally, what attracted me was the name. Founder Tiffany Masterson said, “The name Drunk Elephant is rooted in a myth that says the elephants love to eat the fruit that has fallen from Marula trees. Once eaten, fermentation occurs inside their very large tummies and the elephants become drunk!”

Every  product is formulated with NO oils, silicones, drying alcohols, chemical screens, fragrances/dyes, or SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate). Masterson calls these ingredients the “Suspicious 6”.

The Drunk Life!

Drunk Elephant provided me with a care package of their best-selling products (thanks Drunk Elephant!). I can confidently say I’m hooked on The Drunk Life – particularly because the combination of these products revealed the most glow I’ve ever seen my skin have.

Skin Spring Cleaning Steps

After removing  my makeup with BeautyConcepts face wipes (Amazon – $13), I jumped right into the Beste™ No. 9 Jelly Cleanser ($32). This clear gel cleanser foams well and leaves my skin feeling squeaky clean, without the squeak.

I follow up with the C-Firma Day Serum ($80). It’s a day serum, but nighttime application helps avoid photo-sensitivity. If used in the morning, use an SPF to strengthen your skin’s protection (the Umbra Sheer™ Physical Daily Defense SPF 30 is lightweight and not greasy).

My next step to anti-aging is the A-Passioni™ Retinol Cream ($72). Retinol helps produce new skin cells and aids in diminishing fine lines. Be careful – retinol requires being gradually added into a routine; I use it once per week at nighttime.

If you choose to use it during the day, you should use a broad spectrum sunscreen because retinol makes our skin ultra-light sensitive. If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, you should avoid retinol products and consult with your physician.

The Holy Grail

One of the greatest creations I’ve ever used in my entire life is the T.L.C. Framboos™ Glycolic Night Serum ($90). It’s the gift that keeps on giving my skin a texture-free feel.

It is a lightweight gel that dissolves dead skin cells with an “AHA/BHA blend of glycolic, lactic, tartaric, citric and salicylic acids.” This serum cleared up my often-textured forehead in THREE DAYS!

Since it is an AHA/BHA blend, I recommend pairing with some hydration, like their Virgin Marula Luxury Facial Oil ($40) or my preference of the B-Hydra™ Intensive Hydration Serum ($52).

Lock in the Glow

I sealed my skin with the popular Protini™ Polypeptide Cream ($68), which is notorious for improving our skin’s tone, texture and firmness. An alternate to Protini™ is my favorite moisturizer, Lala Retro™ Whipped Cream ($60). It’s loaded with six rare African oils and locks in moisture like there’s no tomorrow. Finally, I always top off my nighttime routine with Laneige’s Lip Sleeping Mask in Vanilla.

There’s still a few other goodies that I’ve yet to try. I’m definitely going to invest in these and will report back on my next Drunk Life adventure!

GlamLife Lounge

When looking for a cosmetologist, you want someone who is passionate about what they do, someone who loves their craft.

Jennifer Capella, owner of GlamLife Lounge in Maplewood, NJ, couldn’t just focus her passion on her clients outward appearance. Jennifer needed to transform her clients confidence to truly feel like her job was done.

#HipNJ’s Vanessa Coppes welcomes Jennifer to the studio to discuss where this passion came from. When Jennifer relocated from Brooklyn to New Jersey, she struggled to find a place that met her expectations. So she did what most strong women who find something lacking in their community do: they build their dream.

And so, GlamLife Lounge was born. This ‘one-stop shop’ brings all of the most sought after beauty treatments and services under one roof: hair, make up, nails, eyelashes, facials, extensions, and even custom wigs.

That’s where GlamLife Lounge truly stands out; marrying the trendy looks with custom creations. Rather than providing a service just to turn a profit, Jennifer and her staff take the time to educate themselves and their clients on what is truly best for them and their hair.

Jennifer’s prime example of this is extensions, where Jennifer works with clients to make sure their hair and scalp are healthy enough to be candidates. She also prefers micro-links, a version of extensions that often leave hair in much better shape than their sewn in counterparts, even after removal.

This dedication to providing custom service to each client is everything to Jennifer. She tells Vanessa, “If you walk out of my shop with your back a little bit straighter, then I did my job!”

Glam Life Lounge is located at 491 Valley Street, Maplewood, NJ. Be sure to follow them on social media, on Instagram or Facebook!

Spring Fashion with Priya Virmani

#HipNJ’s Lisa Marie Latino welcomes Priya Virmani back to the studio – and she did not come empty handed! She brought mountains of Spring looks from Bloomingdale’s Short Hills, to style our talented hosts.

Lisa Marie is a walking pop of color in her ultra-flattering and ultra-flow-y maxi-dress.

Another fun trend right now is the ‘power suit’. In this segment, Priya opts for a non-traditional silhouette, with an over-sized blazer and a fun, cropped and belted pant.

Priya says buying sets are always a smart choice because one suit can be worked in so many ways, even as separates. As Priya mentioned, rocking the top of a set with the right pair of denim can elevate an entire look and take you from Casual Friday to Girls Night Out in no time! ‘Lazy Dressing’ at it’s finest!

Speaking of denim, we know it never goes out of style, and yet is always on trend! When shopping for trendy denim, Priya says “Look for the fray!”, and pay attention to the little details, like the studded pair she brought us.

Denim and a white tee shirt are one of the simplest combos out there, but, again, Priya has tips on how to elevate each element. The gray toned jeans with studded detailing, paired with a delicate long sleeved, puffy t-shirt are so simple and yet really give that feeling of being “put together”. Pair this look with a fun colored mule (which are also on trend!) and you’ll be the picture of perfection.

Priya Virmani is the founder of Privée by Priya. Styling out of Short Hills, NJ, Priya offers multiple services, all designed to leave you looking and feeling your best.

Priya can help you re-assess all of the beloved pieces already in your closet if you just need guidance on how to wear them. She offers services to help you shop for the cohesive wardrobe of your dreams, including a complete style overhaul, in case you are the embodiment of “I have NOTHING to wear!”

You can find Priya’s Privee Style Studio at PriveebyPriya.com or on social media!
