This month’s Fabulous Female is Alessia Aron! Alessia is the founder and owner of Beyond the Plate Food Tours (formerly Jersey Girls Food Tours). You could say Alessia is a Fabulous Female Foodie, and a young and extremely driven entrepreneur, with a hunger not only for success but for food!
Like most of us, Alessia took the safe route, after high school. She attended Rutgers University and graduated with a degree in Journalism. Shortly thereafter she began a successful career in sales, working at such companies like Hale and Hearty Soup and Yelp Inc. Feeling unfulfilled, and knowing this wasn’t what she was meant to do, she decided to take some time to travel. Alessia decided to backpack through South America, and connect with some of her roots.
Being Argentinian, Italian and Israeli it made sense that Alessia had a deep love of food. All of these cultures believe that food brings people together, and that food is a way to show someone that you care. For this reason, once she returned from her adventures, it made sense for her to dabble in the food industry. Alessia held several jobs, including working at restaurants and doing a part time gig at Dishcrawl. This allowed her the opportunity to network with chefs, and learn more about the food industry.
During this time, Alessia spent time doing research on food tours. She always knew she wanted to be an entrepreneur. Knowing that she wanted to share her love of food, Alessia met her then business partner and without much start up, decided to start her own food tour company. It was the scariest and most exciting moment of her life when, Jersey Girls Food Tours was born. And what better location than Jersey City, which is not only the second largest city in New Jersey, but also the most eclectic when it comes to people, food and culture.
Alessia has had the opportunity to build close relationships with restaurant owners, chefs and therefore create memorable and exciting experiences for those that take her food tours. She injects fun and history into every tour (and sometimes delicious little surprises) which leaves you wanting to come back. Her food tour started just in Jersey City, but with the success of her 5-star food experience(s) she decided to branch out to other towns. Currently, in addition to Jersey City, you can schedule a tour in Red Bank, Somerville and Princeton.
With the growth of Jersey Girls Food Tours, and Alessia’s vision of further expansion, she and her business partner decided to amicably part ways. For this reason, Alessia decided to recently re-brand herself, and is excited to launch Beyond the Plate Food Tours! In addition to the existing food tours, she will have a deeper focus on corporate and private tours. She’s already had incredible success hosting large global companies, like Amazon and Janssen (in addition to small companies for team-building events) and can tailor her tour experiences to groups as small as 6 and as large as 100. She also loves hosting groups for birthday and bachelorette parties and makes sure to give her guests the most memorable, fun and delicious experiences.
Alessia is enthusiastic about food, and sharing her love of food with everyone that takes her tours. Being multicultural it’s her belief that food brings people together. Whether you live in Jersey City or are just traveling, to the area, her tours are a must. Why bother dealing with the traffic and congestion of NYC when you have the best of everything right across the river!? You can discover hidden gems or try new dishes at traditional hot spots.
I asked Alessia what tips she would give anyone wanting to make the leap at being an entrepreneur. She told me it’s important to have a clear vision, a good support system and most importantly to be fearless, and non-stop, in your pursuit of what you want. Being a foodie myself, I had to ask her some tips of best places she would recommend. Since sharing is caring, here are Alessia’s top picks for best, ramen, pizza, steakhouse and Latin food. Ani Ramen without a doubt for ramen (those pork buns tho!), best pizza is Razza, best steak Edward’s Steakhouse and for Latin food her pick is Rumba Cubana. I don’t know about you guys, but I’m starving!
Follow Alessia at @Beyondtheplatefoodtours, or her own personal taste bud travels, at @ale_eats_world_. I think Alessia has the best job in the world. She gets to be an Ambassador for the cities she provides tours in, and share her love of food with her guests. What makes her tours unique is Alessia herself, since she puts her heart and soul into everything she does!
