HIP New Jersey’s February Fabulous Female, is Liana Wright of Jersey City, NJ. She is an entrepreneur and podcaster, who brings the word hustle to a brand new level. Liana owns Dollhouse Xpress and co-hosts Boss Babes and Bubbly. She spent most of her life back and forth from her native Puerto Rico, but now calls Jersey City her home.
Coming from a Latin family, with an old school mentality, it was important for her family to get a good education. Liana attended New Jersey City University, where she graduated with a Bachelor’s in Psychology. Having a flair for fashion, she also received Associates in Fashion Merchandising from Fashion Careers of California, while she was out in San Diego. As much as she wanted to appease her family, and put her psychology degree to good use, she decided to jump right into fashion.
Liana decided to put her Associates to good use, and began working in the retail fashion industry. After years in the retail industry, she eventually got a job in corporate. She dabbled in styling and e-commerce. This allowed her to build her resume. Eventually she went on to work for Ashley Stewart, where she held the position of buyer’s assistant, moved to e-commerce and then went on to be a stylist – which is has always been her passion.
Liana always had the desire to be an entrepreneur. Like many she struggled not knowing how she’d have the means to make her dream a reality. She wasn’t yet settled on exactly what she wanted to do. After working corporate, for five years, she felt stagnant and the responsibilities just kept getting piled. Liana had the desire, not just for financial freedom, but to be more creative. After waiting for a promotion, that never came, one day she had the balls to leave her job.
Without a safety net, and not one to sit on her laurels, Liana starting driving Lyft and Uber. Driving gave her the ability to earn an income while she came up with a concept for her business. Still having connections in the fashion industry, she would get calls from photographers asking if she knew makeup artists, or hair stylists, that she could help get on their set. That’s when the idea of Dollhouse Xpress was born. She realized while driving that there was a market for a mobile beauty service. Just like Uber and Lyft, a mobile beauty service would allow users to order services to get directly in their home.
In a day where we are all so busy, Liana came up with a genius idea for the area. She explained that if someone has an event, wedding, etc instead of booking services at multiple facilities, looking for parking and wasting most of your day you can do a one-stop shop and book with Dollhouse Xpress. This is a busy mom’s dream come true! In addition, her company also offers customized services for birthday, bridal, bachelorette and prom parties – and Liana will even help come up with a concept. Additionally, Liana caters to many seniors who may not be able to easily leave their home, or do their own hair.
After owning her own business, Liana realized that she wanted to pay forward everything she had learned to get to where she was. She feels there are not always resources for women who want to start their own business, or as women we always have someone in our ear telling us we can’t or shouldn’t do this. Liana also wanted to be real that it’s not easy being an entrepreneur and what you see on social media is the end product of a lot of blood, sweat and tears. Being Latina, she wanted that to be her target market so she partnered with fellow Boss Babe, Silvia Sarceno, and they launched their own podcast – Boss Babes N Bubbly!
Having been friends for some time, and both being entrepreneurs, Liana and Silvia vented to each other about struggles or even bounced ideas off each other. One night they realized that they should put on the air everything they were talking about, to inspire and motivate other women to take the future into their own hands. More importantly, they wanted to highlight other women, on their podcast who are business owners and have them share their stories with their listeners. Liana told me the most fulfilling aspect of doing the podcast is how much she’s learned from other women business owners.
I asked Liana Wright what some of the challenges, and benefits, of being an entrepreneur. She told me that the biggest challenges for her where getting out of her comfort zone and the initial impact of tight finances and no medical benefits. In order to get through the challenges, she said you need to “turn down the volume” in your own head. The benefits to her are financial freedom and being your own boss. She also loves paying it back by employing other entrepreneurs or freelancers, because a lot of her referrals are based off of word of mouth.
She credits her mom as being her biggest role model, inspiration and best friend. While cautious, her mom has always been supportive and with her every step of the way cheering on all of her successes. You can book just about any service, or a party, on Dollhouse Xpress‘ website or through their Instagram DollhouseXpress and for all of you babes looking to make the leap to being an entrepreneur, or just want to be motivated, check out your “two favorite jefas” on Boss Babes N Bubbly – a new episode drops every Thursday!
