With so much business still conducted in cyberspace, how are niche online industries faring in the Garden State? As the gambling industry sets out to recover from coronavirus closures, online casinos like Golden Nugget are seeing some inspiring success.
Golden Nugget boasts one of the most popular online casinos in New Jersey, with sports betting and over 700 games. Even as establishments reopen across the state, numbers show that New Jerseyans “feeling lucky” are still flocking to similar platforms, rather than risking a night out.
Across the US, online gambling revenue exploded this summer; the industry saw a swell in over $87.4 million, with sports betting a whopping $29.5 million. These figures are roughly twice what they were in July of 2019, even despite pro-sports resuming on an awkward footing.
The incredible success of online casinos in New Jersey may predict the future in Garden State gambling. Even as some physical locations reopen with the reemergence of indoor dining in New Jersey, the uncertainty of indoor activities as fall approaches could keep us betting on black from bed.
That said, numbers for in-person gambling have not been completely discouraging. While down 21% from last July, casinos and race tracks in NJ did bring in over $264 million this summer—badly-needed revenue for a hard-hit industry.
“While public health remains a concern, the tourism and gaming sector has started on the road to recovery,” said James Plousis, chairman of the New Jersey Casino Control Commission in an interview with FOX29. “I know that Atlantic City is resilient and, given time, it will rebound.”
The reopening of casinos in centers like Atlantic City will hopefully help the local economy recover, as custodians, cooks, and other staff can return to their jobs. Nearly 5,000 casino workers had been laid off since March, making the return of indoor dining-–and their guests—a relief.
Not feeling safe heading back to the tables in-person? New Jersey is home to plenty of online options, meaning you can social distance while winning it big.
