The four-day weekend is over, unfortunately. We are stuffed with barbecued food and saw countless amounts of fireworks. With the red, white and blue festivities happening, you might have missed a few cool things that took place! Don’t worry, #HipNJ is here with the weekend recap!
Bruce Springsteen made a surprise appearance at Southside Johnny & the Asbury Juke’s annual 4th of July show at the Stony Pony Summer Stage. The Freehold native hopped on stage to perform with his old pal towards the end of their set on Saturday night. They sang their own rendition of “Sherry Darling” as well as performing quite a few Southside Johnny songs together.
Springsteen and Southside Johnny (whose real name is John Lyon) go way back, playing shows together and both rising out of the 1960’s Asbury Park music scene. Springsteen made a small appearance earlier in the night, joining in for a song with former band mate and E-Street bassist Gary Tallent, who opened for the Jukes. Yet no one expected Bruce to come out and play half a set with the headlining band!
The United States women soccer team found the perfect way to end the most patriotic weekend in America. After trailblazing victories over Thailand, Chile, Sweden, Spain, France, and England, the USA team was able to defeat the Netherlands with a 2-0 victory, solidifying themselves as world cup champions. After winning in 1991, 1999, 2015, they were able to score a back-to-back victory this year and set the record for the most championships won by a women’s team in FIFA history.
Playing at the world stage propelled these women into international stars, Alex Morgan has quickly become a fan favorite in America after her “sipping the tea” goal over England, Jersey’s own Carli Lloyd has been recognized for her outstanding accomplishments after being on the team for 16 years.
For almost two weeks the world’s attention was set on this team regardless of why you were paying attention, these kick-ass women were showing they truly are the best team the world has ever seen!
In local news, a ice cream shop owner in Montclair bought his employee a new car! Aaron Brunert walked into his work, Gelotti, like it was any other Friday, only to be presented with car keys. After a series of misfortunes, including his former vehicle breaking down last week, the shop’s owner, Mike Guerriero decided it was time to show his appreciation to the hard working employee.
Guerriero stated that Brunert is “an indispensable part of everything we do”, including making personal deliveries to sick customers and running the shop when he is out of town.
Watch the heart warming video of Brunert receiving his new ride here!
Other events that occurred in the state were the OceanFest in Long Branch and ton of fireworks and family events! That concludes the #HipNJ weekend recap!
