How to Maintain Mental Health and Wellness During Quarantine

How to Maintain Mental Health and Wellness During Quarantine

Quarantine may throw your routine into chaos, but before you spend your days binge-watching TV, there’s a better way to handle the unexpected interruption. Get a grip on your mental health with these helpful tips below.

Make Sure to Schedule Everything
What’s your new “normal?” It’s easy to lose track of time and let the little things slide. With that in mind, try your best to keep your focus. For instance, that could include sticking to set meal and snack times, so that you don’t overeat from boredom or forget to eat something other than chips or packaged cookies. Additionally, make it a point to take a shower and get dressed each morning (no pajamas). Set your work-from-home schedule and stick with it.

You’ll also want to set aside time for certain chores, like walking the dog and paying the bills, as well as interests that may include working out or watching an episode of your favorite TV show. Don’t forget to include a bit of social time, too. Schedule time in your day to make calls to friends and family to maintain that human connection.

Get Some Much-Needed Sleep
It’s easy to stay up an extra hour each night and for that hour to turn into two or more. We all know sleep affects everything from the way we perform athletically to our mental state of mind. Sleeping is how your body and your brain reset, so do yourself a favor and make sleep a priority during the quarantine.

If your mattress is worn out, sagging or you can feel lumps and bumps inside it, you’re long overdue for a new one. Check out an assortment of affordable mattresses from Jerome’s for the peaceful night’s sleep of which you’ve been dreaming. Opt for a comfortable, cozy mattress, so that you can begin your day well-rested and feel great.

Develop Some Hobbies
You’re spending more time at home than ever before. Thus, there’s no time like the present to hone your skills or pick up a new hobby. According to a study by Picodi.com, hobbies like tinkering have risen 192 percent, while sewing jumped up 148 percent when comparing March 2019 to March 2020.

If you haven’t had time in the past for a time-sucking hobby, there’s no better time than now. Learning a new skill is exciting, as it gives your brain a much-needed outlet for creativity and fun. Plus, you’ll have something new to think about and a new focus. Consider your interests, and get involved in something that speaks to you.

Get Outside as Much as Possible
If you can go outside, make it a point to take a long walk or bike ride. Stepping out into nature and hearing the birds and the bees will add a welcome dose of relaxation to your day. Additionally, simply seeing a different view will do wonders for your well-being, not to mention the benefits of light physical activity like walking.

Whether you go for walks around the block or you have easy access to walking trails, surround yourself with trees whenever possible. A King’s College London study revealed the importance of trees, sky and birdsong to good mental health. It’s good for you, so take a walking break whenever you start to feel bored or overwhelmed.

Find Your Inner Focus
Don’t coast through your time at home; instead, be intentional about it. Work on your hobbies, stick to a routine, and remember to make time for the sleep you desperately need. Just don’t underestimate the importance of a great mattress. Staying home during quarantine isn’t easy, but if you stick to these and other positive habits, you’ll come out of it happier and healthier.
