How to Protect the Health of the Senior in Your Life

How to Protect the Health of the Senior in Your Life

If there is a senior in your life, you may be wondering how you can help protect their health. As we age, regular checkups, a healthy lifestyle, and preventative treatments become even more important — especially in today’s climate.

There are a few things you can do to help maintain the health of an aging parent. The following tips can benefit their health and happiness, and may even give them the freedom to stay in their own home for longer:

Medical Alarms
For seniors living alone, a medical alarm will provide peace of mind that they are safe. A wearable design such as a bracelet or necklace will ensure it is always close by and can be pressed in case of an emergency. There are different options available; some will automatically dial 911, while others will connect the user to an operator via a speaker system. If your loved one has a fall or other accident, he or she can easily call for help.

To complement the medical alarm you may wish to give your loved one a Medical ID bracelet. These wristbands include easy-to-read information relevant to their medical care, such as allergies, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, or cardiac issues.

Health Insurance
You may be wondering who is eligible for Medicare and when they can apply. The good news is, most Americans who are 65 or older qualify for this basic healthcare coverage. They will need to be a permanent U.S. citizen and eligible for Social Security to apply.

Original Medicare covers hospital stays, doctor visits, hospice care, and preventative treatments. It doesn’t include prescription medication, dental, vision, or hearing services, but these can be added on.

Support Services
Seniors may need additional support services. If they are still living at home, modifications such as grab rails can make the space more accessible. Cleaning and gardening can be difficult to manage as we get older, and you can make life easier by outsourcing these tasks.

Other support services might be useful including transport, personal care, and dedicated day activities that are catered to seniors.

Healthy Meals
Proper nutrition is essential for good health. Unfortunately, some seniors might find it difficult to go to the grocery store and cook for themselves. There are ways you can support them by ensuring they have access to healthy foods. If you live nearby you can take them to the store once a week to stock up their pantry, and prepare healthy meals that can be easily reheated.
Alternatively, there are services available that deliver meals to seniors, which could be a more convenient option.

An Active Lifestyle
Try to help the senior in your life find a fitness activity they will enjoy. Keeping active is good for physical and mental health and there are appropriate options for all ages and capabilities. Swimming, tennis, or gardening are just a few options. Sticking to a regular routine will give them something to look forward to, and fitness can be a great way to socialize.

Make Health a Priority
Taking care of a senior means making their health a priority. As you work closely with your loved one to identify their social, physical and emotional needs, you can help them live life fully in their golden years.
