Local Love: Tony Mangia

Local Love: Tony Mangia

Anthony Scillia, aka Tony Mangia, was born and raised in Lodi, New Jersey. He grew up in a close-knit Italian-American family. Food was always an important part of his life. He recently started a podcast called “At The Table With Tony,” where he visits the places, meets the people, and eats the food that makes many communities in this country Italian-American. Today, he shared his Local Love with HipNewJersey.com!

What is your favorite local restaurant?
This is a really tough question because there are so many great restaurants in Jersey. One of my favorites has to be the Belmont Tavern on Bloomfield Avenue in Belleville. When you walk through the door, you’re transported back into time to the 1960s. The food is classic Italian-American.

Where is your favorite local daytime hangout?
My favorite local daytime hangout is Martino’s Market in Hackensack. Every time I walk into Martino’s, I am greeted by a warm embrace and a kiss on both cheeks from the proprietors. The food is homestyle Italian, dishes that you’d see on your grandparents’ dinner table. Everything is always delicious; but I really enjoy the pasta dishes, roasted chicken & potatoes, and the stuffed clams.

What is your favorite nighttime hangout?
I’ll be honest, any place where I can spend time with my wife. Whether it’s a home-cooked meal at our dinner table, ordering a Sicilian pie from my favorite pizzeria, Lodi Pizza, or out to a nice steak dinner at Roots Steakhouse in Ridgewood.

What is your favorite “Made in Jersey” product?
Marcal toilet paper!! LOL!! Kidding aside, I love Taylor Ham. I mean is there anything more Jersey than a Taylor Ham, Egg, & Cheese sandwich?!

What is your favorite New Jersey downtown district?
I love Ridgewood’s downtown. The town has really come a long way over the years. One of my favorite wood-fired pizzerias is located across from the train station, Sant’Egidio Pizze. I also love the French pastries at Sook Pastry Shop. American Bulldog Coffee Roasters also makes a great cappuccino.

What is your favorite New Jersey-based service business?
Not just because he’s my buddy, but Peter Ferriero from PF Films is an amazing videographer!

How has COVID-19 affected your business?
The pandemic has greatly affected my podcast, because I can no longer visit the restaurants, pastry shops, delis, etc…at least for the time being. I have tried to adapt to this new normal by hosting a spin-off of my podcast from home. I use ZOOM to connect with people in the food industry & beyond to talk about how the pandemic is changing our way of life. I put these interviews on my website and social media pages. It’s a great way to stay connected even when we have to be socially distant.

You can find Tony Mangia on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and his website.
