Happy National Selfie Day: The Art of the Perfect Selfie

Happy National Selfie Day: The Art of the Perfect Selfie

Happy Friday! Not only is today the end of the work week for most, but it is also National Selfie Day! Why not celebrate by taking an awesome selfie?! Not sure where to start? Well, have no fear, Hip NJ is here to help you master the art of taking the perfect selfie.

1.) Find the perfect lighting. Lighting from the back of you, makes your face appear softer, and might blur features. If you face towards the light source, it gives more clarity and adds brightness to your face! Also, try to work with natural light, avoid fluorescent which can completely wash you out! If you can’t find the perfect lighting in your house, go outside and use sunlight!

2.) Angles! Test them out. One that might work for your friend may not work for you! For instance, Joe Jonas can take a selfie looking straight down and still looks amazing.

but for some of us, that’s not the case. Angles can vary depending on the face; therefore, you need to know your own! If you don’t see yourself at various views, then you won’t know which one works for you and which one doesn’t!

3.) Smile, but not just with your mouth! If you’re going to show some teeth, the best thing to do is to not force it.

4.) Once you nailed the lighting and the angles, it’s time to snap away! The limit of how many selfies you take is endless (well, depending on the storage space on your phone). Take a lot, because the first shot you take is most likely not going to be the winner.

5.) Finding the perfect filter. Most phones come with the portrait mode that you can use within its camera. This brings more focus to the main subject, not so much the background.

Also, you don’t have to just rely on Instagram for your filter choices. There are some cool apps that offer various types of edits and even retro, early 1990’s vibin’ filters, such as KujiCam and Afterlight, which lets you edit already taken pictures. Just remember, you don’t want to over edit your pics. It can take focus away or diminish your beautiful features!

We hope these tricks help you, because with these simple tips, your pictures will stand out in your friends feeds and you will be swimming in likes! For fun, we added selfies of our favorite NJ celebrities to give you some inspiration!
