Three middle school girls from Essex County turned their passion project into a small business. Jada Bednar, Ellie Ghingo, and Ava Tsettos are the founders of JAÉ Candles and Co.
Jada and Ellie are students at H.B. Whitehorne Middle School, and Ava is a student at Grover Cleveland Middle School. During quarantine, the trio was overwhelmed with boredom and curiosity. They decided to experiment with different fragrances and learn how to make candles. They had no prior experience with candle making, but they quickly discovered how much they enjoy crafting together.
They began selling their candles door-to-door; they advertised through word-of-mouth and on social media. After receiving so much support from their community, they started selling their candles on Etsy and Facebook. By early October 2020, the girls had sold over a thousand candles. They realized their new-found hobby could become a full-time business, so they launched an official website and created a 2021 Summer Collection.
These girls are passionate about giving back, so they teamed up with Team Zoey, a local organization that’s dedicated to raising money for the Progeria Research Foundation. A portion of their proceeds will benefit this organization.
The trio sells their candles to local stores like Montclair’s Pink Bungalow and Jaipure Yoga. (Additional stores will be announced.)
