Orange Is the New Black’s Dale Soules on New Jersey Upbringing

Dale Soules, actress from Orange Is the New Black, sat down with Steve Adubato on “One-on-One” to discuss how she was ostracized as a child because of her poor upbringing.

Soules was born in Jersey City, and moved to Greenwood Lake with her family when she was about five. The NJ Native did not have a typical upbringing.

“I grew up in a house that, for some years, had no running water.” She goes on to say that she and her family carried water that ran by the brook on the side of the house.

While Soules did not see a problem with this, her classmates perceived her as “dirty” and began to exclude her. “I didn’t have the right consumer goods, I didn’t have the right clothing, so I was pretty much an outcast.”

At that time, Soules decided that she wanted to be known for who she was, what she had to say, and how she treated people.

She has been doing just that. In 2014, she won “Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series” at the 2014 Screen Actors Guild Awards for her performance in the Netflix original series, Orange is the New Black.
