Sophie Gutter, creator of Chess For Chicas, sat with Maria Falzo in the #HipNJ studio to discuss making playing chess fun for girls.
Sophie wrote a book titled, Chess for Chicas: How to Play Chess and Love It, after noticing that the vast majority of kids she was playing chess with were boys. She began playing chess when she was four, and began competing in tournaments when she was in Kindergarten.
Emily Levy, Sophia’s mom, tells Falzo that her daughter got the sense that other girls were not as drawn to chess as she was, so she developed Chess For Chicas. The mother and daughter team developed both the book and a chess set, aimed at making chess exciting for girls.
What is Sophie’s favorite part of the game? “Winning,” she says. To learn more, click here.
