GlamLife Lounge

When looking for a cosmetologist, you want someone who is passionate about what they do, someone who loves their craft.

Jennifer Capella, owner of GlamLife Lounge in Maplewood, NJ, couldn’t just focus her passion on her clients outward appearance. Jennifer needed to transform her clients confidence to truly feel like her job was done.

#HipNJ’s Vanessa Coppes welcomes Jennifer to the studio to discuss where this passion came from. When Jennifer relocated from Brooklyn to New Jersey, she struggled to find a place that met her expectations. So she did what most strong women who find something lacking in their community do: they build their dream.

And so, GlamLife Lounge was born. This ‘one-stop shop’ brings all of the most sought after beauty treatments and services under one roof: hair, make up, nails, eyelashes, facials, extensions, and even custom wigs.

That’s where GlamLife Lounge truly stands out; marrying the trendy looks with custom creations. Rather than providing a service just to turn a profit, Jennifer and her staff take the time to educate themselves and their clients on what is truly best for them and their hair.

Jennifer’s prime example of this is extensions, where Jennifer works with clients to make sure their hair and scalp are healthy enough to be candidates. She also prefers micro-links, a version of extensions that often leave hair in much better shape than their sewn in counterparts, even after removal.

This dedication to providing custom service to each client is everything to Jennifer. She tells Vanessa, “If you walk out of my shop with your back a little bit straighter, then I did my job!”

Glam Life Lounge is located at 491 Valley Street, Maplewood, NJ. Be sure to follow them on social media, on Instagram or Facebook!

A Guide to Improving Your Style

A Guide to Improving Your Style

If you’ve taken a glance around your group of friends and are fretting that you don’t seem to have as good a style sense as everyone else, then don’t panic. Style doesn’t have to be expensive or involve a complete clear-out of everything you own. Instead, sometimes improving your appearance can simply come down to being a little more selective with the items you do purchase in the future, and clothing pieces you currently own.

Empty your wardrobe
If you’re self-conscious about your style, then the best way to fix it is by taking a broader look at your wardrobe. Rather than pulling through endless hangers of clothing items you never wear, pull out every single item and assess whether you really want to wear it again. If you have a number of tops that make you feel frumpy or unappealing, place them in a separate pile for a thrift shop.

Finding new ways to organize and categorize everything in your wardrobe is also incredibly helpful for taking a much closer look at everything you own. Using stylish storage tools such as wicker baskets or specially-designed scarf hangers can also push you into being far more choosey about what you decide to put on display.

Look to your icons
Often, those who appear to have impeccable style will have taken their inspiration from their own personal heroes. Many people cherry-pick their heroes’ best style features and integrate them into their wardrobe. Style comes down to personal taste, so try not to worry too much if your heroes might be regarded as unusual. After all, someone who lives in body-con dresses and leopard print won’t agree with someone who wears Doc Martens and second-hand clothing on what makes for a stylish outfit. Fashion is subjective.

Once you’ve accumulated a few styles that include fashion pieces that you like, you can begin to start trying out what works. Instead of just throwing anything on, put on combinations and see if they work together. This is one way of creating your own judgment on what looks good, and what clashes enormously. Taking inspiration from women you follow on Instagram is also a great way of judging which combinations work best.

Find some statement pieces
Unless you have an enormous budget, you don’t necessarily have to have a wardrobe that’s bursting with high-fashion items. Picking out a few statement pieces that tie many outfits together will help you feel effortlessly chic. For example, finding a stylish overcoat from Gloverall.com will help you browse a number of styles before settling on one that works with your current look. If you have a particular color you know you look good in, finding particular pieces in this shade can add a pop of brightness to outfit choices.

Before you undergo any form of style transformation, remember to not be so hard on yourself. Before you discard everything you don’t like, be sure to compliment yourself on what you do like. Not only will this help with your self-confidence, but it will also enable you to accent your best features, and compliment them with your outfits.
