#HipNJ Visits San Francisco

This Memorial Day Weekend, #HipNJ visited San Francisco! Below is a breakdown of the action-packed trip.

We arrived at our hotel late on Friday night, so the adventure began Saturday morning. We took a five minute stroll from our hotel and quickly found ourselves in Chinatown. This was so cool! So many shops selling beautiful jade bracelets, and so many places to get some delicious bubble tea. The area’s culture was breathtaking, and it was a great learning experience.

Later, we decided to head over to Fisherman’s Wharf via one of San Francisco’s famous cable cars. We held on as we made our way down the busy streets, wind in our faces. Once we got there, we were overwhelmed by the amount of shops and the gorgeous views.

A standout of the trip would have to be the sea lions resting at Pier 39. They were so cute, bringing smiles to everyone’s faces.

The next day, we went on a tour of Alcatraz, which was once a maximum high-security federal prison. The tour was educational, but also gave us the creeps! We got to walk into a solitary confinement cell and see where these dangerous criminals spent all their time.

Something we were dying to try was In-N-Out Burger, which we don’t have in the Garden State. We waited on line, anticipation building, and finally received our burgers and “animal style” fries. The verdict? Good, but Shake Shack takes the cake.

Last, we took a hike up to see the Golden Gate Bridge. We were greeted with one of the most beautiful views we’ve ever seen. The picture can speak for itself. We walked the bridge after, which made us feel better about skipping the gym.

The trip was short, but definitely sweet. San Francisco has so much to offer, we look forward to going again!

All About the Grammy’s Weekend Recap

 By: Lisa Cardoso

This Weekend Recap is all about the 59th Grammy’s Music Awards! Hip New Jersey, was loving every minute of it! Queen Bey’s performance had us glued to the TV, Adele’s re-do of “Fast love” had us confused and Chance the Rapper made us proud!
Adele had a tough start to the 59th Grammy Awards by singing off key to the George Michaels tribute. When she began to sing she fell a little flat causing her to stop the song and start over. There are many different opinions on this but us at Hip New Jersey think she did the right thing.

Starting over and not allowing the George Michael tribute to be imperfect shows a great deal of respect to him. Adele is an all around respectful person. Winning three of the top awards last night and being the first time an artist has won all three (record of the year, song of the year, and album of the year) she took her acceptance speech and honored her close competitor Beyoncé. Although her start may have been a little rocky, she was the shining star of the Grammy’s taking home five awards!

Another artist to congratulate and recognize is Chance the Rapper, taking home three awards last night (best new artist, best rap album and best rap performance). A win that goes down in history because Chance is the only artist to win a Grammy without selling physical copies of his music. Chance has remained unsigned and only drops his new music via live streaming allowing audiences of all means able to listen to his music. Congratulations Chance the Rapper and thank you for remaining humble and giving!

Did you know #BestNewArtist winner @chancetherapper is the first artist to win a GRAMMY from a streaming-only album? Congrats Chance! #GRAMMYs

Now, we haven’t forgotten about Queen Bey! Beyonce´s performance last night was a movement as she wore a Peter Dundas golden gown. Fans are saying it was a religious experience and are in awe of her beauty. Starting out with her mother introducing her and her daughter sitting by her side, captured the essence of how important her family is.

Carrying twins can’t stop this proud mama from getting on stage and completely kill it! Her pregnancy glow radiated through the screen and touched all of her fans personally. The golden gown and the large gold head piece illuminated her already golden heart. Beyoncé set the bar for all pregnant women out there.

Beyoncé was nominated for nine different awards, although she didn’t win all of them beyonce was the highlight of the Grammy’s. Adele accepting her highest award still turned the spotlight right back on to Beyoncé.

This breathtaking performance by @beyonce is just the beginning of the epic #GRAMMYs performances happening tonight. Keep watching on @cbstv!

A few other highlights we wanted to mention:

-Katy Perry’s performance of her song “Chained to the Rhythm” got a little political starting with the well known Hillary Clinton pantsuit and ended standing in front of the constitution yelling “No Hate!”

-Twenty-one pilots accepted their award in their underwear? Although fashion is a huge part of the Grammy’s Twenty-one pilots decided to shed their bottoms and walk out on stage. Before the duo became famous they watched the award show in their underwear, it only seemed fit to continue their tradition and accept their award in the same suit.

-Bruno Mars performed (and dressed like) Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy” and nailed it.

-Even though there was technical difficulties Lady Gaga’s performance with Metallica. Metallica’s “Hardwired” was nominated for Best Rock Song, but fell short to David Bowies “Blackstar”

I'm living!!!! @twentyonepilots #TwentyOnePilots #Grammys

Pokemon Go and a Jeter Wedding: Weekend Recap

Just because the holiday weekend has passed doesn’t mean that #NJ isn’t, well, hip anymore! The #GardenState had nothing short of awesome things happening throughout. See what went down and who stirred things up this weekend in our weekly weekend recap.

Earlier in the week, Pokemon Go was released on the app store. In the game, virtual Pokemon appear through the player’s smartphone camera and are to be captured and trained by the player. The fever over this new twist in the international franchise made its way to New Jersey this weekend as people of all ages indulged in this new virtual reality.

In probably the most adorable of news, the state revealed to the public that the senate recently passed a bill that requires all pet stores in New Jersey to sell only dogs that originate from animal shelters or rescues. The bill seeks to battle the issue of the abundance of puppy mills throughout the nation. Next, the bill will go to the assembly, where a debate will ensue.

Canadian superstar Justin Bieber made his stratospheric comeback with Purpose, his latest album, after a few unfortunate clashes with the media and he’s celebrating it with the Purpose World Tour. The show hit the Prudential Center in Newark on Saturday night. With singles like “Sorry” and “Love Yourself,” it’s hard not to learn to be a #Belieber again. The media loves a bad boy, right?

Saturday marked day two of the The Vampire Diaries Official Convention at the Hilton Parsippany. Fans in attendance had the opportunity to actively engage in the fictitious world of the popular show all weekend. Perhaps the most exciting and highly anticipated part of the convention was a celebrity appearance by Ian Somerhalder, one of the show’s main stars.

While it may have been a sad day for the ladies, it was certainly a happy day for Derek Jeter as he tied the knot with girlfriend and model Hannah Davis on Saturday. Jeter, the Pequannock Township-born professional baseball shortstop, and Davis chose the small ceremony route and wed in Napa, California.

Old Bridge native and elite gymnast Laurie Hernandez didn’t hesitate to wow the audience and the rest of the young gymnasts watching nationwide at the gymnastics Olympic Trials in San Jose, California. In her first year as a senior gymnast, she was named to the team for the Rio de Janeiro Olympics on Sunday night at 16 years old. She finished well ahead of many of her elders, earning herself gymnastics superstardom.

Young Australian rock band 5 Seconds of Summer proved that they can keep up with the other biggest boy bands in the world on Sunday. Currently in its North American leg and in support of Sounds Good Feels Good, the band’s latest album, the Sounds Live Feels Live World Tour arrived in Holmdel at none other than the PNC Bank Arts Center.

I love playing to you. Thank you for this evening Holmdel, New Jersey, we had 12,000 strong tonight xx
