The Breakfast of NJ Champions

It’s an Olympic year and it’s inevitable to wonder how the world’s top athletes maintain their health and physique. Seriously, the bodies of some athletes are insane. It’s safe to say that breakfast has to do with it – it is the most important meal of the day, right?

But what is it that these athletes consume each morning that allows them to succeed in their careers?

Take Michael Phelps, perhaps the greatest Olympian ever, for example. After his record-breaking performances in the 2008 Olympics, he revealed that of his 12,000 calorie-a- day diet, breakfast makes up 4,000 of those calories. This appears inhumane, but it’s obviously paid off for him.

Though their diets (and appetites) may not be as plentiful, here is what some of #NJ’s Olympic athletes have for breakfast each morning when preparing to represent the United States (and the #GardenState) at the games over in Rio de Janeiro.

Monica Aksamit, Matawan – Fencing

Who would think that a 26-year-old Fencer likes to indulge in tiramisu the first thing in the morning? Whether or not this is a normal occurrence is unknown, but hey, who said dessert for breakfast was bad?

It’s actually on the rise and isn’t too complicated to prepare.

Laurie Hernandez, Old Bridge – Gymnastics

The 16-year-old first year senior gymnast achieved overnight superstardom when she was named to the women’s team for gymnastics. She starts her day off with oatmeal and some sort of fruit and then eats half a cereal bar in the middle of her morning training to hold her in for a few more hours.

Carli Lloyd, Delran – Soccer

The 34-year-old Soccer superstar is very specific about her diet and takes it seriously. For breakfast, she typically has three egg whites with half of an avocado, Greek yogurt, low-sugar granola and a fruit that is in season, the best time to consume fruit. Find out what’s currently in season here.

Jersey Residents Gain Exposure – Weekend Recap

Another weekend has gone by as we move into the halfway point of #Summer2016 and the #GardenState is nothing short of exciting! #HipNJ has the updates that will surely keep you in high spirits as August approaches in our weekend recap. This weekend, a lot of New Jersey residents were making headlines. Here’s why.

Friday, June 22nd

There must be something in the water in New Jersey – Pittstown’s Adele Dunlap recently earned the title of America’s oldest living resident. Born on December 12, 1902, Dunlap holds the record by a couple of months at 113 years old and has spent each of those years in New Jersey.

Youngsters have also been earning coverage. We forgot to mention in our guide to Jersey’s Olympic athletes that of the 555 Americans going to Rio de Janeiro in less than two weeks, the two youngest females reside here. We like to start them early. The first is 16-year-old gymnast Laurie Hernandez of Old Bridge. One of the few Olympians born in 2000, she’s a major contender to medal whereas her scores have bested those of the world’s top female gymnasts. Also making her Olympic debut is Dunnell’s Sydney McLaughlin, also 16, a hurdler and sprinter. A few months older than Hernandez, she is the youngest American track and field athlete to qualify for the games since 1972. She’ll turn 17 in Rio, so hopefully a golden gift awaits.

Saturday, June 23rd

Comedian Julia Scotti, 63, of Whiting came to the Bananas Comedy Club in Hasbrouck Heights on Saturday. But Scotti isn’t an ordinary comedian; she’s a male-to-female transgender whose out to prove that age and other barriers shouldn’t hold you back from pursuing your dream. Oh, and she’s a quarter finalist on the current season of NBC’s America’s Got Talent. Check out the show in the coming weeks to see what she’s all about!

We met Julia Scotti after her performance tonight! #juliascotti #americasgottalent #bananascomedyclub

It doesn’t take long to realize this summer heat is among the hottest #NJ has had in previous years – all you have to do is walk outside. Saturday was probably the peak of this heatwave, with some areas reaching the 100 degree mark. Don’t let the heat deter you, though; go out, cool off and make the most of it!

Sunday, June 24th

You can’t turn on the news without hearing about the upcoming presidential election. Because of controversial candidates and the rise of social media, there is more hype than ever around this election. Although the Democratic National Convention didn’t start until today in Philadelphia, Jersey democrats decided to kick things off with a convention of their own aboard the Battleship New Jersey on Sunday night. Those in attendance included more than a thousand democratic leaders, delegates and officials.

Pokemon Go and a Jeter Wedding: Weekend Recap

Just because the holiday weekend has passed doesn’t mean that #NJ isn’t, well, hip anymore! The #GardenState had nothing short of awesome things happening throughout. See what went down and who stirred things up this weekend in our weekly weekend recap.

Friday, July 8th, 2016

Earlier in the week, Pokemon Go was released on the app store. In the game, virtual Pokemon appear through the player’s smartphone camera and are to be captured and trained by the player. The fever over this new twist in the international franchise made its way to New Jersey this weekend as people of all ages indulged in this new virtual reality.

In probably the most adorable of news, the state revealed to the public that the senate recently passed a bill that requires all pet stores in New Jersey to sell only dogs that originate from animal shelters or rescues. The bill seeks to battle the issue of the abundance of puppy mills throughout the nation. Next, the bill will go to the assembly, where a debate will ensue.

Canadian superstar Justin Bieber made his stratospheric comeback with Purpose, his latest album, after a few unfortunate clashes with the media and he’s celebrating it with the Purpose World Tour. The show hit the Prudential Center in Newark on Saturday night. With singles like “Sorry” and “Love Yourself,” it’s hard not to learn to be a #Belieber again. The media loves a bad boy, right?

Saturday marked day two of the The Vampire Diaries Official Convention at the Hilton Parsippany. Fans in attendance had the opportunity to actively engage in the fictitious world of the popular show all weekend. Perhaps the most exciting and highly anticipated part of the convention was a celebrity appearance by Ian Somerhalder, one of the show’s main stars.

While it may have been a sad day for the ladies, it was certainly a happy day for Derek Jeter as he tied the knot with girlfriend and model Hannah Davis on Saturday. Jeter, the Pequannock Township-born professional baseball shortstop, and Davis chose the small ceremony route and wed in Napa, California.

Old Bridge native and elite gymnast Laurie Hernandez didn’t hesitate to wow the audience and the rest of the young gymnasts watching nationwide at the gymnastics Olympic Trials in San Jose, California. In her first year as a senior gymnast, she was named to the team for the Rio de Janeiro Olympics on Sunday night at 16 years old. She finished well ahead of many of her elders, earning herself gymnastics superstardom.

Young Australian rock band 5 Seconds of Summer proved that they can keep up with the other biggest boy bands in the world on Sunday. Currently in its North American leg and in support of Sounds Good Feels Good, the band’s latest album, the Sounds Live Feels Live World Tour arrived in Holmdel at none other than the PNC Bank Arts Center.

I love playing to you. Thank you for this evening Holmdel, New Jersey, we had 12,000 strong tonight xx
