Unexpected Fashion Trends for 2019

Unexpected Fashion Trends for 2019

Fashion is constantly evolving, and trends are constantly coming and going. It can be hard to keep up with them all. But there are also a lot of trends this year that we didn’t expect. Below are eight unexpected fashion trends for 2019.

Saturated Colors
The redundant black-on-black monochromatic looks are being tossed aside for neon and high saturated colors. All over the runways this season are exciting reds, yellows, greens, and blues mixed with simple accessories to not draw away attention from bright statement pieces. Spring is fast approaching, and the season is famous for enlivening spirits and bringing new life into your wardrobe. It’s about a revival of sorts, and what better way to celebrate than with a bright green frock? Prabal Gurung’s most recent FW ‘19 show has us salivating for more saturated colors!

Cinched Tailoring
This trend is not for the faint of heart. Cinched tailoring suits and jackets are reminiscent of the high-fashion days of 80s Mugler, and it screams chic and elegant! The tomboy look is still in fashion, but with some fine hemming and tailoring, a frumpy blazer can make you look spectacular with any accessories. The amazing part about this trend is that a sculpted blazer or piece can be paired with sneakers or jeans and still look elegant and expensive.

For those that hate it, the normcore look is still trending in 2019. This fashion statement is popular among all different types of people, from celebrities to poker players. To get a handle on this look, wear a pair of boyfriend jeans, sensible shoes, and a classic tee. Throw on a sweatshirt or baseball cap to really get the look down.

Mixed Prints
This year is all about bringing the drama. Having chaotic and clashing pieces is super on-trend right now, with the likes of Phillip Lim for his 3.1 collection, or Virgil Abloh for Louis Vuitton. Animal prints have been the wave of the past, present, and future, being a fun way to truly create balance in a boring wardrobe. Mixing zebra with cheetah print, giraffe with tiger print — all of it is exciting and fresh! This is an exotic and interesting way to create new looks with old safari pieces that may have been sitting in your closet for years now. Even searching through your closet and rediscovering stripes and dots can make for a contemporary look with a modern twist. Pair this trend with some polished sunglasses for a 50s vibe, or keep it simple with stud earrings and a bold lip.

Matching Set 90’s Chanel
The 90s have been coming back in full force through music, movies, and especially fashion. Anything Chanel does will be copied and remade a thousand different ways, and this year is no different when they made the comeback of the matching set. Who doesn’t love a sleek two-piece outfit paired with a great bootie heel? Slick your hair back into a low ponytail for the ultimate business girl look.

Bright Plaid
Plaids and tartans will always be a staple in fashion, but this year the artistry is being amped up a notch. Plaids no longer have to be browns and reds and nudes. The bright plaid trend will be seen everywhere this year, from old-house designers like Cynthia Rowley, and more modern brands like Tibi. A bright plaid makes you runway ready while also keeping you sophisticated enough for a morning meeting.

This iconic silhouette has trickled down from couture to streetwear — and there’s a major reason for it. The hippest brands like Eckhaus Latta and Ugg are creating ready-to-wear looks that include the perfect square-toe boot cut. Boots are always the way to go, upgrading any casual outfit from drab to fab. Texture matters too, as we are seeing the square-toe being fabricated from sheepskin to calf hair to the classic pebbled leather. Pair this futuristic trend with some flared jeans that your boots will peek out from to create a subdued yet refined outfit for nights out on the town or a quick coffee with a friend.

To close off the list, we could never forget about khaki. Khaki, along with nudes and camo, made a dominating comeback a few years ago, still being a Kardashian-Jenner favorite, and a Yeezy fashion staple. Khaki brings the idea of “neutral” to life, with its calming tones and muted palettes. Step into style with a trench coat, just in time for the spring.
