#MakeADifferenceDay Jersey Cares

USA Weekend Magazine created Make A Difference Day back in 1992. Since then, many organizations have supported, developing campaigns centered around the holiday. Now, USA Today is its primary sponsor and organizer. It is the #1 location to find ways in which you can make a difference. Ways to celebrate are limitless.

There are numerous organizations across the globe that focus on making a difference daily. #HipNJ would like to highlight Jersey Cares, a program filled with hundreds of volunteer opportunities, open to everyone! The make volunteering super simple! First you register, and then you can choose a volunteer opportunity, participate in an annual event, start a collection drive, or even get your company involved in their Corporate Service Program

Volunteer Opportunities

Jersey Cares has volunteer opportunities available  every single day. For the remainder of the month, they have opportunities such as Marketplace, Tutoring and Mentoring, Pet Therapy, Halloween Costume Drives, Earth Keepers, Mobile Meals, Caring Closet, Care of the Park, Hunger Helpers, and so much more!

Annual Events

Jersey Cares holds their Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service event annually in order to embody Dr. King’s vision, bringing people of all ages and backgrounds together. The goal is to strengthen their communities and build a stronger New Jersey. This year, 1700 volunteers in 20 service projects, across 10 counties, honored the legacy of Dr. MLK Jr. by serving hot meals to those who needed them, creating blankets for the homeless, painting murals in schools, sending time with seniors, and more!

They also hold their September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance event annually. In 2017, they gathered 500 volunteers at a Jersey City high school. Volunteers honored those who were affected by 9/11 through projects such as creating thank-you kits for first responders, landscaping the schools 9/11 memorial, and painting inspirational murals in the hallway.

Customized Corporate Service Programs

Becoming a Jersey Cares Partner means getting your company involved in a non-profit partnership that will benefit the community. Your company will receive customized volunteer project planning services for your employees, clients, vendors, family members and anyone else you choose. So far, Jersey Care Partners have participated in interactive workshops, financial literacy and resume building workshops, greenhouse building and more!

In addition, apart of the Customized Corporate Service Program is The Jersey Cares On the Go Program. It provides employees the opportunity to contribute to their communities through team-based projects that are implemented right in their offices or on-site at a conference!

As you can see, making a difference is made simple by Jersey Cares. Let’s join them today!

As they say, “Be the change. Volunteer.”

Gwendolyn And Joseph Straus

#GivingTuesday Gwendolyn And Joseph Straus Charitable Fund

The Gwendolyn And Joseph Straus Charitable Fund, a charitable organization founded by the Straus family, recently distributed $1.5 million to 185 families in Puerto Rico affected by last year’s Hurricane Maria with the help from  CareOne, a premier, family-owned healthcare company with more than 55 senior living centers across six states.

As the world reflects on the one-year anniversary of the most devastating natural disaster to ever hit Puerto Rico, #HipNJ is proud to note that CareOne was quick to help raise money for a fund that brought hope, relief and comfort to those on the island who needed it most.  The generous donations have helped many families purchase household necessities, generators, healthcare supplies and equipment, and so much more.

The Straus family and CareOne’s commitment to rebuilding Puerto Rico started immediately after Hurricane Maria hit thanks to CareOne CEO Daniel E. Straus and Executive Vice President Elizabeth Straus. On October 11th, CareOne participated in the first of two relief missions to Puerto Rico with New Jersey healthcare leaders and physicians from CareOne and RWJBarnabas Health. The trip included visits to hospitals where physicians spoke with local healthcare professionals and patients on the ground to evaluate how best to address the immediate needs of the island’s medical community.

Following the October 11th trip, Senior Leadership mobilized to raise additional funds for Puerto Rico by arranging a benefit gala entitled “Starry Night Masquerade.”  This event was spearheaded by CareOne President and CEO Daniel E. Straus and Executive Vice President Elizabeth Straus. The event speaks to the culture of philanthropy that is ingrained in CareOne as a company.

“Starry Night Masquerade” was a star-studded evening that included celebrity guests like NFL players Victor Cruz, Jason Pierre-Paul and many NFL alumni, recording artists Pitbull and JoJo, and models and actresses Danielle Brooks of “Orange is the New Black” and Joan Smalls. Watch #HipNJ’s coverage from the star-studded affair.

One year later, the Gwendolyn And Joseph Straus Charitable Fund, with support from CareOne, continues its relief planning with an on-the-ground team who continue to work to ensure the proper dissemination of supplies to medical facilities, as well as to transport patients in need from Puerto Rico to New Jersey.

NJPAC Women’s Association Spring Luncheon

#HipNJ spent a lovely afternoon at the NJPAC Women’s Association Annual Luncheon. An annual favorite, the event is a truly unique experience hosting over 500 prominent and high profile women business leaders and philanthropists from the NJ metro area onstage for lunch on-stage at Prudential Hall.

This year’s keynote address was given by Mikki Taylor, editor, speaker, author and proud “Brick City girl!” She shared messages of empowerment and strength from her new book, Editor in Chic: How to Style and Be Your Most Empowered Self with host Michelle Miller of CBS News.

Here are some of the day’s highlights. For more, visit #HipNJ on Instagram and view our story from the day:

The day began with a networking reception and festive silent auction.

One of the event’s unique features were on-site professional headshots!
