HIPNJ’S Weekend Recap 6/7-6/9

This past weekend held a lot of sensational events in the Garden State area!

To start off, #HipNJ had the amazing opportunity to be a part of the NY #DenimDaysFestival, held across the river at the Metropolitan Pavilion! The event took place over two days, with Sunday hosting the 18th Street festival! There was live music, street yoga, fashion shows, discussion panels, and more- all relating to denim attire!

This weekend also presented the 73rd Tony Awards. Though it didn’t take place in New Jersey, there was a Ridgewood native that made headlines at the show. Ali Stroker, known for her Broadway roles and appearance on the Glee Project, became the first person in a wheelchair to ever win the coveted trophy! Beyond inspirational!

June kicked off its 2nd huge Pride event on Sunday, the North Jersey Pride festival, which took place at Maplewood’s Memorial Park. The festival held performances by local talent, offered delicious local cuisines, kid-friendly play zones, and hosted vendors selling rainbow gear and other goodies!

The College of New Jersey held the Special Olympics 2019 Summer Games, the largest competition of the year! The 3-day event had participants compete in bocce, gymnastics, powerlifting, softball and swimming, just to name a few! There were about 2,500 local athletes participating in the games!

Other honorable mentions that took place include: The Jersey City Jazz festival, AnimeNEXT convention in Atlantic City, Frenchtown’s NJ Kennel Dog show and the Meadowland’s Battle of the Best Burger!

This past weekend, New Jersey was home to such a diverse range of amazing events! Here are some of our favorites!

LGTBQ+ Pride Month Kicked off in Asbury Park

Pride Month began in NJ with the first celebration in Asbury Park. The festivities began at noon, and the Asbury Park streets quickly filled with a parade, food, and performances.

The parade traveled from City Hall to Ocean Avenue. This kickoff is only the beginning! Pride will continue to be celebrated throughout the month in the Garden State.

Saquon Barkley of the NY Giants Hosts Local Football Camp

West Essex High School in Caldwell was visited by New York Giants Running Back, Saquon Barkley. He hosted an open football camp this past weekend on Giants’ campus to boys and girls in first to eighth grade.

Barkley’s intention was to help attendees boost their performance in the game. This camp proved to be a success by drawing in over 400 kids.

Dog Expo at the Meadowlands Expo Center

Many New Jersey pet owners made their way over to the Dog Expo over the weekend. The event consists of shopping, training, and education. One of the main goals of the expo is to promote rescuing and fostering dogs in need.

10th Annual Renaissance Faire Comes to an End

The past three weekends the NJ Renaissance Faire has been in Bordentown. Attendees were able to watch live jousts, fire-eating performers, and glassblowing demonstrations. Even though the Faire has come to an end, stay updated on their website for smaller events they are holding throughout the summer.

Weekend Recap: June 22-24

Too busy to attend some great events over the weekend? That’s ok because #HipNJ has the weekend recap scoop on what you missed!

NYC PRIDE PARADE JUNE 24

The Parade is a celebration of the lives associated with the LGBTQ+ community. This year, grand marshals included Billie Jean King, Lambda Legal, Tyler Ford, and Kenita Placide, who made this years NYC Pride Parade one to remember. The theme of this year’s Pride Parade was “Defiantly Different.” There was also a total of 80 floats and tens of thousands of marchers there supporting the community.

BRADLEY BEACH LOBSTERFEST JUNE 23-24

The Bradly Beach Lobsterfest was a free event which had six bands and an emcee as well a DJ. After dancing and singing people could  enjoy a nice cold beverage from one of the 180 craft and specialty beer vendors. A large beer and wine garden was also available. For the children’s activities, there were water slides, rides, face painters and sand art activities.

WINE & CHOCOLATE WEEKEND

New Jersey‘s finest wineries were back for a weekend of elegant wine tasting! Some of the area’s best chocolatiers and dessert vendors also joined the event for the sweet tooth lovers. This year an indoor “Chocolate Lounge” and dessert area was incorporated into the event, and was expanded throughout the Grandstand  so there would be easier navigation.

ATLANTIC CITY FOOD TRUCK FESTIVAL JUNE 23 – 24

The Annual Brighton Park Food Truck Festival was at The Claridge this year, a Radisson Hotel. People could enjoy the start of the summer with food trucks, beer & bands! Guests were able to sample a range of culinary dishes from American comfort food to seafood, barbecue, desserts, and more from the area’s top food trucks!

SOMERVILLE CRAFT BEER FEST 2018 JUNE 23 – 24

The Summerville Craft Beer Festival allowed guests to come from all over and try beer from N.J.’s top brewers. There was live music throughout the festival while separate activities occurred. There were sip and paint classes, dunk tank for charity and this years first giant beer pong tournament!

Adults were able to sample craft beers from breweries throughout the Garden State. Guests that attended the Beer Festival were able to tour the Battleship, rock to music from the Cabin Dogs and enjoy some great pub food! The General Session went from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. In addition, guests got a VIP option which allowed guests to attend at 12 p.m. VIP guests were also able to sample some special brews and meet the breweries.

The 32nd Annual Red White & Blueberry festival featured live music, kiddie rides, a huge classic car show, arts and crafts, stilt walkers, and jugglers. The event also featured all blueberry type foods such as pie, muffins, fresh berries, lemonade and even a blueberry pie eating contest. Furthermore, the blueberry themed food seems fitting as it was held in blueberry capital of the world!
