Nashville Entrepreneur Nikki Lane

While on a recent trip to Nashville, #HipNJ chatted with Music City singer/songwriter Nikki Lane! Not only is Lane an artist, but she’s also an entrepreneur! 

Lane wrote her first song at the age of 25, after a breakup and says becoming a songwriter was “one of the most selfish things” she’d ever done. During her early songwriting days, her main line of work involved working in fashion.

Once she got a record deal, she moved from NYC to Nashville, where she grew her music career and business, High Class Hillbilly. Lane explains that the road to success hasn’t been a clear and steady one, but because she persevered, she ended up where she is today.

Lane says, “Getting those no’s and getting those rejections in the field you want are just kind of pushing you to be more creative and a better version of the type of project you’re trying to do and so, just try little harder”. 

High Class Hillbilly is based in Nashville, TN. The items they sell are vintage, hand picked from places all over the US. The vintage boutique is filled with hats, vintage boots, fashion pieces, fun pieces and leather goods.

Bluff City BBQ: Your new weekend spot!

Looking for a new restaurant to try this weekend? #HipNJ has got you covered. Bluff City BBQ has opened its doors in Montclair, and is serving up some Memphis-style BBQ and southern-inspired cooking.

Bluff City is the nickname for Memphis, Tennessee, which sits on the bluffs above the Mississippi River. Memphis is the distinctive style of barbecue served at this BYO, along with “a touch of soul,” Bluff City BBQ Owner and Culinary Director Scott Hermo states.

Memphis-style barbecue is traditionally pork-focused, dry-rubbed, smoked low and slow and served with Hermo’s house-made sweet-sour tomato- and vinegar-based sauce on the side. Executive Chef Pierre-Jerome has incorporated his trademark Southern/Creole flair throughout the menu.

“The BBQ Sampler of pulled pork, ribs and brisket is a big hit, along with Fried Chicken and Shrimp and Grits,” Hermo says. “Mac and Cheese is also a crowd pleaser and kid favorite.” Popular desserts include Bananas Foster with Ice Cream and Chocolate Brownie, and decadent Bread Pudding w/Caramel Rum Sauce.

The food isn’t the only handcrafted element at Bluff City BBQ. Hermo sourced and built most of the furniture and decor himself, salvaging antique wooden doors and lumber from in and around Montclair, refashioning them into tables and benches; and reclaiming tin ceiling panels, molding and porch posts that appear throughout the 90-seat space.
