Tips For Protecting Your Home During Storm Season

Tips For Protecting Your Home During Storm Season

Storm damage can be both dangerous and very costly. Luckily, some basic upkeep and maintenance can go a long way to reducing the risks of storm damage. You may not ever be able to control whatever the weather does next, but you can take steps to protect yourself, your home, and your family. Many of the steps that you can take to protect your home are simple and extremely low cost and will often require very little in the way of hard work. If you want to protect your home more during the storm season, here are some tips that will go a long way to keeping your home safer.

Check Your Shingles/Tiles

Your roof tiles and/or shingle need to be in good condition, especially as the storm season approaches. Damaged tiles can break a lot more in high winds creating potential flying debris that’s sharp and dangerous. Missing tiles or shingles let the weather into your home, too, leading to even more damage. Check your roof regularly, and repair any potential risks.

Clean Your Gutters

If you want to devalue your home, then water damage is one of the fastest ways to see your property value drop. Cleaning your gutters means that your home is better equipped to handle larger than usual rainfall and ensures that excess water is going where it’s supposed to be going. If that water gets into your foundations, then your home will become dangerous to live in, and you’ll struggle to sell at the right price.

Generator Maintenance

Power cuts can happen very quickly in a storm, and going without power for any length of time can lead to all sorts of problems. Having a generator is always useful, but you must remember to have it maintained regularly. Platinum Electrical Contractors are generator experts who will do your maintenance for you and can help to make sure that even during the worst storms, you are never without the power you need to keep safe, warm, and secure.

Keep Trees Trimmed

Falling branches are a common problem during any storm season. While it can be hard to eliminate that threat entirely without chopping down every tree in your neighborhood, even just a regular trim can go a long way to protecting your home. Check every tree near your property and keep the limbs as short as possible so that they are more durable. Not only will this help to protect your home, but it might help your neighbors too.

Take a Walk

If you don’t have the skills or the tools to carry out extensive repairs or big maintenance jobs, there are still things that you can be doing. Simply taking a walk all-around your home and garden before a storm, and identifying potential risks, can be incredibly useful. Look at the items that could become dangerous projectiles in high winds, such as flower pots, tools, and your yard furniture. Make sure that anything that could become a projectile is stored away safely.

Storm season brings with it a lot of uncertainty, but you can keep your home more protected by simply following some basic steps. Take the time to minimize the dangers, and you and your family will be safer even when the storm is raging outside.
